About a week ago a friend and I were discussing UConn's possible landing spot in another conference. I suggested the Big 10 and he said not possible, as their by-laws are written today. He stated they require schools to be in contiguous states.

Not that by-laws can't be changed, but does anyone know if this is correct? If this has been discussed, can someone please post a link to that discussion? Thanks.

This has come up about a million times before. And I fell prey to this assumption as well. According to Frank the Tank, the whole contiguous thing won't stop them. It's an old bylaw from a bygone era.

Think about it, of OU and Texas asked to join, do you think they would decline based on that bylaw?

Maryland isn't adjoined by any B1G state.

The Indiana AD seemed to indicate that it wasn't absolutely a requirement:

http://www.insidethehall.com/2013/10/21/glass-talks-big-ten-expansion-addition-maryland-rutgers/
There’s been little news on expansion since April, when the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced that its members had agreed to a grant of rights, leaving the SEC as the only major conference without such an agreement.
The lack of recent movement, however, doesn’t mean that the Big Ten or the IU athletic department have moved the issue off of the radar completely.
“That’s one of the more important things we’ve been working on is expansion. Whether we continue to expand, I don’t know. I can tell you that there’s no active efforts to identify partners to expand with,” Glass said. “But having said that, I think 16 (members) might be a bit of a sweet spot and if two high caliber academic and athletic institutions applied for membership, my guess is, if they met our criteria of being academically excellent and hopefully geographically contiguous, although I’m not sure if that’s completely critical, my guess is we’d do that.”

A 15 mile stretch of NY state would not stop the B1G from taking us.

Unfortunately they are not going to expand for reasons that have to do with anything that happens on the fields or courts. If they cared about that they would've never taken RU. They were taken for geography and population only. Only delusional RU nitwits think otherwise.

Yeah, because if RU was winning 3 games each year the B1G would still bring in Rutgers. Right.

Since 05 RU only missed one bowl game and that was the year when Legrand broke his back and the team was demoralized. Stay tuned, plenty more to come in the future.

I really do not understand why you guys aren't pushing for the ACC. It's a 10x better fit for UCONN.

I am completely jealous of the fact Rutgers got asked to join the Big 10 and not UCONN. Any UCONN fan who says they aren't is a complete liar. But you honestly think football had anything to do with the invite? It was the NYC market.

I admittedly don't follow Rutgers football that much. How has the move to the Big 10 affected recruiting?

They are a conference that primarily sits in a part of a country that celebrated Lincoln's assasination.

Not to mention the fact that they broke apart the best basketball conference in America and a football conference that was on par with it. The northern teams they took are afraid to let us into the conference.

F the ACC. Go Auburn.

Closest point of the west shore of the Hudson in Jersey to the CT border at Greenwich as the crow flies is 11.8 miles. Intervening region is NYC and its metropolitan region, which is basically a suburb of Stamford. I can't imagine the BiG is gonna quibble over 12 miles.

For perspective:
  • The Rent is 20 miles from Storrs.
  • East Lansing is 50 miles from Ann Arbor.
  • The University of Nebraska is 1140 miles from SUNJ.

You're one of the idiot nitwits I was referencing. You're a delusional fool. The B1G took UMD who came off back to back losing seasons and a 2-10 campaign. Cable boxes. That's all this was about. NYC and DC.

But keep on chopping with your delusional fantasies.

It's "contiguous". I realize it's a trivial matter, but then again, so is Rutgers and it doesn't stop you from bringing that up either.

I am glad you are so proud of these bowl accomplishments. I was not aware Rutgers went to that many bowls. I guess I just don't pay much attention to these lesser bowls unless Uconn is in one of them. Otherwise, I could care less. My hope for you is that Rutgers can continue its bowl tradition in the B1G. Thanks again for sharing.

It is a myth. It does not exist.

Your point, that we would be a far better for in the ACC than the B1G does have some validity (although I am one of many UConn fans who would prefer the B1G) and i imagine that it could easily be argued considering our history of success in sports that the ACC does prioritize, men's hoops, women's hoops men's soccer and women;s field hockey.

Considering our history of success I will not denigrate your opinion (even though it is one that I do not agree with). While viewing your school's history of success I am of the opinion that Rutgers is a 10x better fit in the Colonial.
