Rankings

I have a great deal of trouble respecting the polls - Stanford lost to a team that received 0 votes, even AFTER beating Stanford, and yet one person still voted Stanford #1. Really?!?
UConn has four less wins than Stanford, so even with the loss I think Stanford should still be ranked ahead of UConn. UConn should be no higher than 6 or 7 until they win some more games.

6 or 7 seems a little light. On the basis of pure team talent, I'd say 4 or 5.

But at some point you have to actually win games and can't just rank teams by how they look on paper as they do for the pre-season polls.

I'm not arguing where they should be ranked vs UConn, just saying Stanford shouldn't have gotten a 1st place vote

Stanford is still first in the Massey rankings

It’s a bad loss to be sure but away in ot.
And they still beat #6 by 12, #11 by 30, and #13.
Lou and UCOnn have beaten 0 top 15 teams.
I didn’t have Stanford 1 in my BY poll but I can see the case.,

That would be true if UConn hadn't played. But they've played seven games, and are top three in all of the computer rankings and in NET.

Totally disagree ..... should a mediocre team rate a higher rating on the basis of having played more games??? How many people don't think that Ohio State football team was easily one of the best three or four teams (if not higher) in the country despite playing substantially less games than anyone in the top 25? Exactly the same applies to women's basketball .... who out there doubts that UConn is one of the top four teams in the country?

So if UConn doesn't play another game this season, would you keep them ranked where they are? This is the argument that some used against Ohio State this year because they played the minimum number of games to qualify while other teams went out and played their full schedule. Sure Ohio State is one of the best teams in the country, but I think at some point you have to put that aside and reward the teams that play and win the games on their schedule.

Ask @Plebe how many BY voters put UConn 5 or lower.
I had UConn 5th.
Four out of the 16 voters in the latest BY poll had UConn at #5.
The other 12 had UConn at #4 or higher.

oh good. Someone posts on the UConn board that they think UConn should be penalized because the virus has hurt their schedule badly. They have beaten teams they should beat and have done so roundly. You are intitled to your opinion as I am of mine and I choose to disagree. I've watched every team I thought could be trouble. Stanford impressed me as solid. Louisville usually played top grade basketball. I have not seen another team that particularly worries me except Maryland and I look to past performances so I still rate them below UConn. I feel UConn is top 3 with any of those 3 winning today. I look Forward to seeing more game experience where the team chemistry puts us on top.

Did you know UConn was ranked No. 1 one year and lost a game and was voted No. 1 still. The team that beat them was Tennessee.

I have sort of adopted a policy in my BY Top 25 ballot that if you aren't playing, even if it's something out of your control like COVID, you shouldn't be ranked above teams that are putting their records on the line, even if it is against lesser teams. In the previous two BY ballots, I had Louisville in the #5 position because they were either not playing or were coming off a layoff, and I had NC State at #2 because they had continued to play.

This week, I moved Louisville to #1, UCONN to #2 and dropped NC State to #4 (and behind South Carolina, a team they had beaten earlier in the year), because the Wolfpack Women had not played a game since the last ballot. I doubt NC State will look like the team that was rolling along pretty well prior to their pause when they finally return to action on Thursday. I justified putting them ahead of Stanford due to their still-undefeated status...but I am concerned about what will happen the next game.

If we are going to rank solely based on games played and records, then we don't need a poll. Just look at the numbers...

I can't lie, I was another one voted UConn at #5

I think we can all agree that this is on strange season. A season where rankings or records will not matter as much as most other years. Not very many out of conference P5 games to get a real gage of conference strengths. Even the games that were played were not under optimum conditions. It should be interesting how teams are bracketed. And the Nattie might be determined purely by which team can actually show up for the games. What happens if the tourney starts and a team has to enter quarantine?
