ya think?
Yeah, but read the rest of the sentence. Unless the University was willing to step to the plate and make a bunch of, let's call them investments, in the program, Calhoun's tenure would have been alot more modest. Go back to the time he was hired and read the old report, youknow the one Calhoun said he asked "How much of this are you committed to doing?" And over the years UCONN did all of that and more. Not sure if you were avond and followed UCONN basketball during the Dee Rowe days or the Dom Perno days, but the fact is that while Calhoun was the spark plug, success at this level wouldn't have come without lots of other things happening.

I think you are missing the entire point of the article and discussion. This has nothing to with what is the "biggest." Whatever that means. It is about which is the best job. Geno and the women's program has nothing to do with it.

I think you are missing the point. The mens program is a great job in part because our mens and womens programs are top notch. The programs compliment each other. Geno has a lot to do with the success of the mens program, if you don't see that you don't know Uconn bball.

I have to go with ford on this one. Louisville is and always will be the 2nd favorite program in their own state, by a huge amount. And in fairness it has been a pretty long time since they won a title and Crum was the coach both times, though they do also have an NIT title from back in the 50s when the NIT was at least as prestigious. But even given that, Louisville's support will always be limited in a state that worships Kentucky.

Syracuse has the dome, and gets huge crowds there, but again, the Dome is also an aging facility, in an aging rust belt city. They have been less successful than UCONN over all unless 1>3. And they face at least the same questions about life after Boeheim as UCONN does after Calhoun. Maybe bigger ones...

Overall, UCONN, Syracuse, Louisville are 1-3 though, and rank far far above the others.

The Dome is pretty overrated from the standpoint of a fan experieince. It's awesome when 30k show up for a Uconn game, not so much before Big East play starts.

With that said, I'd wager that the Dome is still an extremely effective recruiting tool. It's still the largest on campus arena and nowhere else does a recruit get that 30K experience but at a handful of programs (Kentucky is the only school that averages more than Syracuse). The YUM center is nice I'm sure, but I don't think recruits care about luxury suites. They spend most of their time att he practice facility, and the one at Syracuse is brand new.

I think 1-3 are Lville SU and UCONN but it's really splitting hairs.

Yep, the biggest factors in a basketball job are Facilities, recruiting base, fan support, and strength of the womens' basketball program.

el oh el.

You know a statement is absurd when I find myself agreeing with a Syracuse fan on a UConn message board.

If you were looking for a head coaching job and had to chose between Uconn or Syracuse, it would not be much of a choice. The strength of the Uconn women's program is an asset to the Uconn mens basketball program, it's unique. There are no other schools that have a women's program that can enhance a mens program. So you can't use that comparison across the board.

The terms excellence, tradition, winning and championships mirror both the mens and womens programs. What potential coach would not see the bball programs as a whole and not be excited to be a part of the Uconn experience?

How exactly does the women's program "enhance" the men's? Be specific.

I happen to think our program is "enhanced" by the lacrosse program.

Convince Shaka to come and be head coach (he's holding out for that offer right now anyway). Make sure Ollie is ok with it and make him associate head coach, and obviously head of recruiting.

Those two plus the new facilities, Calhoun hanging around as the program patriarch, uconn becomes a top recruiting spot immediately.

I like the way shakas teams play, tough hard nosed. And I like Ollie's steady hand, and NBA cred.

We can all dream right?

The only 'enhancement' that the women's basketball program has on the men's is that some extra donations towards the joint practice facility may have been made by fans who solely root for the women's program.
