This is purely for educational purposes, but does anyone know how the Quad's are determined when we say something like X Team was 13-2 against Quad 1. Also, given that teams and results are constantly shifting, do the quads also shift? I would assume so, but just curious.

NET, explained

Using the quadrant system, which was in its fourth season in 2020-21, the quality of wins and losses will be organized based on game location and the opponent's NET ranking.

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

This is perfect. I knew I was off in something. Thanks, @HuskyNan!

Everyone seems to forget that all this starts with "pre-season" rankings (polls). Which are garbage most of the time. I have no issue with the "Quads" concept. I just think they shouldn't begin calculations (even retroactively) until conference play starts.

I totally agree, except, if they did it differently anyway, I like the idea of being able to track it as the season rolls along. To be fair, it's garbage until teams get some games in and then it starts to become 'representative'. Totally acknowledge that. I'm actually building my own platform so people can play around with the data more and as part of that, I want to build a rating system that is purely data driven so that folks can look at data v. "Top 50" v. "Top 100" or whatever they happen to want to see. I'm still determining what that will look like. I like the Quad concept too but I feel like there's no easy way to "touch it" and use it until almost the end of the season when people care about it b/c the tourney. I want something that's representative but also easy to engage with throughout the season.

It's no different than the old RPI system being used to start seasons. At this stage of the season - during post-season tournament play - its all moot because the NET rankings being used for the Quads have all taken the season's wealth of games into consideration for their rankings. They are as accurate as the NET rankings are going to get, while there are still games being played......
