QB Cole Welliver enters Transfer Portal

Late to comment on this as I was traveling when the news broke and diverted my attention elsewhere.

This is, as others have said, not surprising. There were a lot of fans who put stock on the arm from Texas...I don't think I was ever convinced he was ever going to stay here and was just going to use UConn to go to a bigger school. Of course hindsight is clearer than being in the thick of it. Kid's gone, so be it. CFB is just a revolving door of seasonal players. I don't care who the QB is, just get me someone who limits taking sacks, throws 3-4x more TDs than INTs, can run a bit, and doesn't get in trouble academically or legally...might as well ask for that Maserati again. ^_^

Spring is a tough time to go portalling, for a QB especially, when teams have their rosters pretty well set. There isn't a ton of known talent transferring, it's mostly depth. No real game tape, all potential. Chances are he has to go down for the chance to move up.
Yup, but that may not be all bad. Assuming he gets significant PT. However, even at FCS level that may not be assured. He will have to evaluate his options carefully. He desperately needs game snaps.

I'd say if a school like NDSU, SDSU or even USD come calling you take that opportunity over BGSU and RI..

Depends. If he wants to play then BGSU or URI might be the better option than the dakotas
The idea is to get game snaps under the belt. The Dakotas can probably beat a good portion of FBS mid majors. That route would be risky. Agree with you Patman.

If he goes Bowling Green he is competing with Pyne. Not sure he can be sure he’ll see much action there. Pyne didn’t transfer for his last year because he wanted to play in the MAC. He might surprise but I think a FCS option might get him on the field in 2025. Even a MAC slit won’t be a guarantee of playing time.

Ok. Forgot about pyne and wasn't talking in the literal and somebody else mentioned bgsu. Not saying you're blaming me.

It is interesting to see how these players sort out and how playing time has become an intense commodity.

It's quite a crapshoot for these kids. I was shocked at the odyssey that ZionTurner has been on. Expected him to leave and be the man at his first port of call, Jacksonville St. Seemed to get worse from there. Not sure what the QB situation at Marshall is, but seems like he is at risk for low PT again.

I think it's worth the shot for them if they know PT is not in the cards for them in their current situation. Turner found out he wasn't going to start and Evers would. He wanted to find somewhere he could start so went into the portal. For whatever reason he thought JSU was a better shot and he took it. It's the life that many of these kids want. They hope eventually they'll hit at one of these stops.

He left before Evers was really a thought here. He was behind TaQuan and Fagnano when he left in December 2023. Who knows if he would've even been over Cole in the depth chart.

I’m not sure what you’re intending to say here. The guy that recruited him was an OC and 2 QB coaches ago.
I have no idea about this specific case but I have always suspected that a significant percentage of portal guys have been advised by coaches that they probably don’t have a future with the current program. I don’t know what that percentage is but I bet it is above 25%. We know it happen often in basketball. So questioning if it might be true in this case is hardly way off base.

I'd guess it's even more. There are so many guys in the portal with little to zero numbers posted.

Thanks. I got my years mixed up! TaQuan left because of Evers. Turner started because TaQuan and Joe got hurt that season.

I’m not trying to be a “well actually” guy but Joe wasn’t on the team in 2022 when Zion played. Ta’Quan took over for Joe when he got hurt in 2023.

He went to JSU to play for Rich Rod but got buried on the depth chart. Rich Rod bailed, did not bring Zion with him, so Zion transferred to Marshall where, at the time, he was the only QB in the room after Marshall basically lost their entire team.

He's competing at Marshall with a transfer backup QB from Syracuse, a red shirt freshmen with some low range FBS offers, and a transfer who was an NAIA backup.

Giving this whole topic a lot more thought. In the last five years there has definitely been a paradigm shift that most athletes seem not to be recognizing. To maximize your development, unless you are a four or five star being recruited by a major program, you don't want to shoot as high as possible right out of HS. You want to shoot a level or two below the highest program schools that you are getting interest from. The idea here is to get on the field, get some numbers in the books right away. Hitting the portal without numbers means that you have wasted a year. So as soon as you put up some numbers, assuming they are good, hit the portal for the next season and take a step up, keeping in mind the step up should not be too big because you have to make progress at each step to take the next one. SA overreach is a thing these days. And, at some point, you might realize that the NFL is not in your future and that you are happy where you are.

I've actually started to wonder if the right thing for 3 to 4 star freshman qb isn't to sign up for say a mid FCS or decent division 2 but I suppose the danger is that you aren't able to demonstrate your talent and you're just stuck at that level.

At least with the other positions there's more opportunity to play and demonstrate talent so you maybe would have to slum it at uconn instead but QB is a "one man only" position

“Slum it @ UConn”??

Looks like they have 3 QBs on the roster, 2sr 1jr, all transfers. Including a QB from Bethany CT that played at Hamden Hall.
