Qadence Samuels commits!

Stephanie Dolson was ranked as the 39th-best recruit nationally and rated as the second-best center in the country by ESPN Hoopgurlz back in 2009, or 2010. I watched her play for the Tennessee Flight(AAU) team at Nike Nationals in July 2009. I said to my self what does Geno see in her, other than a very good post up center. Geno knows what he can do and what potential players have, or what he can teach them to do.

Rankings, or ratings are something for the Bio page on the college roster link and for parents and grandparents to brag about. "Oh look what my Sally Sue is ranked and what award she won" Means nothing if you cant move up a level and improve your game, in all facets.
I interviewed the Tennessee Flight AAU coach after Stefanie committed and even HE felt Stef would be “a nice role player” for UConn. I should have asked him after Stef graduated what he thought of her development :)

She is a four star recruit listed at #35. I’m surprised UConn would recruit a player at that ranking unless they see something no one else does.
Geno knows 100 times more than the best recruiting service.

She will jump in the rankings but not just because she committed to UConn. It will be because the services will start paying attention to her.

.-.
If you just recruit the top of top recruits, inevitably their high ranking leads to player dissatisfaction if they aren't immediate impact players. You need solid role players too that will stick around. You can't lose your recruits to transfer every year and maintain stability. We need players to stick around four years. P.S. Love her hair. Shows personality.

W Qadence Samuels
6-foot-1
Bishop McNamara (Md.)

Samuels effortlessly runs the floor. She glides baseline to baseline and is a threat to either sprint for an easy layup at the rim or spot up for the transition triple. Her confidence and effectiveness from deep have really improved over the last year. Her improved shot preparation has helped her in all aspects of her shooting, and she attacks the elbows for pull-up jumpers very well.

Defensively, her frame and length allow her to be a real weapon for her team. Her high school and club (Team Takeover) programs emphasize defense, and she has begun to buy in. As that becomes more of a staple, she can be a lock-down type of defender, and her rebounding will improve as she adds more strength.

Samuels, who averages 13.5 points and 6.9 rebounds, has a competitive edge in between the lines that separates her. As she learns to translate that into day-to-day work, consistency and production, watch her stock continue to rise. She has offers from North Carolina, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Florida State, Alabama, Kansas State, West Virginia, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech Miami, Mississippi State and Pitt.

This is Qadence's father's twitter account. Scroll down and you'll see offers and visits (home/unofficial) from/with Tennessee, Maryland, NC State, UNC, Louisville.

She has a younger sister (Qandace c/o of 2027) who is pretty good too.

Congrats to Uconn. I swore she was a TN lock. Shows just how much we can’t look into social media and visits. Looking forward to seeing her play
Same!! She pops up on my social media a lot and it really seemed inevitable.

Thank goodness I was wrong

MaxPreps puts her on 3rd team All-American among juniors. They have Arnold and Shade on 2nd team and Toomey on 3rd team.
I think we don't concentrate much on the "lower" ranked players but also I don't ever remember her name coming up in visits by coaches or even being followed on social media although I could be wrong.......ever since Megan Gustafson became an All American at Iowa and was ranked #80 by ESPN I've been a bit less impressed by the rankings....

Anyone remember where Kara Wolters was ranked when she committed to UConn? How about Jamelle Elliott or Carla Berube? They won the National Championship in '95. I think Geno knows talent.

A couple of ????

Is her name pronounced "cadence?" Does she prefer to be called "K" or Sammy or just her given name?
All the reports seem really good.

Kara was unranked. Although tall, she was too heavy and out of shape to dominate in high school. BC, where Kara wanted to go, wouldn’t recruit her because she was considered a project.

Jamelle was pretty highly regarded, around 10-12, I believe. But you need to remember rankings were regional and didn’t cover every are of the county. High school girls recruiting wasn’t widespread at that time.

For all the hoopla about the "rankings", I did some research and here is how all our players stack up:

Hoopgurlz
  • 6 Shade
  • 7 Arnold
  • 35 Samuels
Prospects Nation
  • 3 Shade
  • 8 Arnold
  • NR in the top 25 Samuels
Blue Star
  • 9 Shade
  • 7 Arnold
  • 32 Samuels
ASGR
  • 9 Shade
  • 7 Arnold
  • 42 Samuels
JR All Star
  • 5 Shade
  • 16 Arnold
  • NR top 100 Samuels
Prep Girls Hoops
  • 33 Shade
  • 8 Arnold
  • NR top 50 Samuels
Some of my info is older - especially for ASGR - so i'm not sure if AS or KK's rankings have changed. In this thread ASGR listed Samuels' ranking so that was easy. Some of the rankings are way outliers - Prep Girls for Shade at 33? JR All Star for Arnold at 16?

Either way it looks like both Ashlynn and KK are squarely in the top 10 consensus. Quadence seems to be in the 30's for those who ranked her, but composite much lower since she's not in the top 100/50 for a pair of services.

But let's be honest. We beat out local Maryland, elite Louisville, up and coming Tennessee/UNC for a kid who a lot of teams apparently wanted. And bottom line, she will either be great and start eventually, good and be a solid reserve off the bench, decent and be a role player at the end of games, or some combo. We read that she runs like a gazelle, has a solid mid-range game (Mir never did), and has been working on her 3-point shot. Tons of upside. How will she develop? No idea. Fingers crossed that she develops a lot! :D

The staff will do all they can to help her develop and not only be a as good as she can be, but also a great kid and teammate. If she ends up unhappy and doesn't progress/develop enough to be a contributor as she envisioned, maybe she will transfer out. OBVIOUSLY I'm not projecting anything, but good players like Espinosa-Hunter, Poffenbarger and McLean weren't able to make it work at UCONN. AEH ended up having a very nice career at Seton Hall, McLean was really solid on a dreadful Virginia team, and it remains to be seen what Saylor does at Arkansas.

Anyway not trying to hijack the thread to talk about other players. Just to point out that we ALL should be super excited. We got a kid who WANTS to be at UCONN, and to me that means she wants to work hard, is aware of the challenges based on who else is coming/here, and is ready to rock and roll! Now she's one of ours, and I am pumped, like MOST of the folks on here.

Welcome to the basketball capital of the world, Quadence. I hope all your personal and basketball dreams come true!

Rankings can be dependent on how many times a player is viewed. Or, as sometimes happens with a team that has a lot of D1 prospects, details about a player can be overlooked.

Kia Nurse was ranked 33 by Hoopgurlz, although this might be because ranking services normally spend a lot more time evaluating US players.

check out the video and you may want to add yourself to the someone else list - ultra quick, leaper, big hands with a high release on jump shot (hard to find that high release, something that is missing on most current recruits or on Uconn roster)

Any interesting overlap with Azzi and/or the Fudds?
According to the UConn Blog, Qadence’s high school team, Bishop McNamara fell to Azzi’s team , St Johns, in the Maryland state championship game.
