ANOTHER shoe drops! Was the old saying: Don't let your children grow
up to be HEAD COACHES?? or was it " Many are called, ... but few are retained?""
Best wishes for Coach Jim Crowley and his staff.... may you land on your collective
feet in a personally satisfying situation. Z

The Providence AD should ask himself why coaches haven’t succeeded there for a long time. Blaming the coaches is an easy answer, but is it the right one, hmmmm?
The way their men’s head coach lashed out at UConn fans after a loss leads me to believe that they are a somewhat “dysfunctional family.”

Prior to becoming the head coach at CCSU beginning in 2020-2021, Kerri Reeves was an assistant coach & recruiting coordinator at Providence for a number of years.
A former Marquette standout player, Reeves was a fixture at Providence similar to Shea Ralph at UConn.

I’m saying that the Providence AD needs to be sure coaches have what they need to be successful - recruiting budget, facilities, funds to hire the right assistants, etc

This is always tough but as coaches, we understand this is the nature of the business. You can only do the best you can and go from there. Great run, Coach Crowley.

How can the smaller schools like Providence and Xavier compete in this league?

It is doable. I know at one point Xavier and Providence weren't top tier schools in women's basketball, but they were in the middle of the Big East.

The Providence men have been ranked most of the season.

Ed Cooley makes $3,751,112

Jim Crowley made $352,042
Yikes! Does that include endorsements & incentives?

In mho, coaches have a right to lash out at fans of most men's basketball teams. The fans are wackos. What's more important is the respect he showed the UConn team after that loss. Ed Cooley has done a great job there, last season losing to eventual champion Kansas by 5. Providence's men's BB program has a long and proud history, going back to Joe Mullaney and Dave Gavitt. The women's program has certainly lagged behind, and Cooley is an emotional guy, But none of that qualifies as a reason to lead anyone to believe they are a "dysfunctional family". Oh, and If you're going to criticize a program based upon how a coach conducts himself, you should probably start with UConn and Hurley.

Crowley is no longer unemployed...returning to St. Bonaventure, his gig before Providence.
Wondering why they brought him back instead of seeking some new blood, up and comers? In 16 seasons with StB, he went 258–231 (.528) overall, and 110-133 (.453) in conference. At Providence for 7 seasons, it was 85–125 (.405) overall and 32–94 (.254) in conference.

Yes he made the WNIT 2nd round 3x, the Quarters 1x, NCAA R32 1x and NCAA sweet sixteen 1x, however this was all with StB.

It’s a constant problem in women’s basketball that coaches are “recycled” because of short funding or an indifferent athletic department, or both. It’s too much money to lure an established coach from another school or invest the time and effort to find talented coaches in the high school/D2/AAU ranks.

But the quality of coaches in the women's game is definitely on the upswing.

Crowley is a rural New Yorker who wants to go back to rural New York.
He brings instant credibility to a program that hasn't had a winning season since he left.
St. Bonaventure is a very small school & the town only has a population of 2,000.
No one would be a better fit to try to rebuild that program than him.
They're just about at the very bottom of their conference and fired their coach in January after 6 years, probably in anticipation of Crowley coming back.
Plus he's won numerous coach of the year awards including an ESPN National Coach of the Year.
It seems to me to be like when St. Joseph's College lured ex-UConn coach Jim Calhoun out of retirement to coach their Division 3 men's team.
It's a no brainer because of his wealth of experience, his reputation & his willingness to take the job.
