Some thoughts on the Providence game:
  • I am always curious to see how UConn responds after a loss relative to energy, execution, strategy and player rotation.
  • Solid defense played today, as the Huskies forced 25 turnovers and held the Friars to just 26% shooting.
  • Offense was inconsistent at times. Paige and Azzi came out a little cold, but both really got it going. Kaitlyn & Ash came out hot. Sarah continues to fill up the stat sheet, but she does struggle somewhat to make contested layups against bigger forwards.
  • I expected that Ice would be out. But I was really disappointed that Aubrey did not play today. Did I miss something relative to her health?
  • The Huskies finally set up Jana in the low post during the 2nd half, and she made a couple nice moves while finishing with her right hand. I would like to see a lot more of that, particularly against teams like Providence where UConn can force-feed the post without worrying about the game outcome.
  • The Huskies got to the FT line a little more frequently today, hitting 12/13.
  • Time for Geno to watch his beloved Eagles as we all turn our attention to the SuperBowl.

A good win against a decent defensive team on the road.
  • Paige was smothered in the 1st quarter, but Kaitlyn and Ash carried the team with 7 and 8 pts.
  • Paige picked it up in the 2nd quarter with 8 hard fought points.
  • In the 3rd quarter, Azzi hit 5-5 from 3 and 17 points. The game was completely out of reach after that.
  • Sarah looked a bit tired, missed some layups, but rebounded well. This is probably to be expected after the Tennessee game in which she really shined.
  • This was a decent bounce back game with some very shiny parts, including smothering defense, and some uneven parts as well.
  • I also would have liked to see more minutes for Jana in games like this. She did some good things, had a few TOs and one really good loose ball chase down on a long rebound. I want to see more of that.
One worrisome note: Aubrey didn’t play and seemed to be limping on the sideline.

We did what we needed to do. Got the win and no injuries. Some good floor time for everyone.

I certainly hope some of this shooting can carry over to next game.

The announcers called this a "bounce back win" for UCONN. Was it really? I expected a 40 point win over a team who is 3-10 in the Big East (but they were picked 3rd - mystifying). 8 points in Q4 did nothing to build the lead.

Defense was solid, ball movement mostly good, but the rebounding was simply not good. We gave up 11 O-boards, and lost the rebounding "battle" by 1 - 37 for PC, 36 for UCONN.

Yet again the 3 point shooting was on point... against an overmatched team. Until this team shows they can actually knock down open shots against a good team, I'll continue to be underwhelmed. It's nice for the stats, makes fans excited, but really sort of an optical illusion.

I will say I was glad that the subs of Q and Allie did not come in till very late - midway thru Q4. I think Geno needs to give the starters and KK/Ash more PT together for better chemistry. I'm not sure Morgan is an answer off the bench as she continues to just be ok.

Bottom line tho, a fun game to watch against an overmatched opponent.

Nice to get a win and that should always be celebrated.

If missing layups and missing close shots was a drinking game I’d have a hangover for much of the season, lol.

Seriously though I thought Paige came out looking to do something on offense and she got to the foul line numerous times. I also noticed the guards getting her the ball coming up court versus taking it themselves more frequently.

Really need to see the Azzi and Ash we saw today more consistently as we head into the end of the season and then the tournaments. The hit and miss of their game to game production has to be more of what it was today.

Was bummed not to see Aubrey hopefully nothing more that taking it slow as she rounds into form.

KK has really played well, IMO, since the USC game. As she learns to finish stronger at the basket her game will take another jump forward.

On to the next…

I thought Morgan was pretty poor today. Passed up a lot of open shots. Turned the ball over a couple of times. Occasionally confused on defense. But she is coming in to rest a player more than anything else imo. It is going to be a problem if she plays against South Carolina. Won’t be able to hide out there. Hope Aubrey is okay.

We steamrolled Providence as we were supposed to. Now we have to steamroll St Johns like we are supposed to. Get back in a rhythm, get the confidence up, build winning behaviors, and let's see what happens a week from today.

We need to start hitting layups. If we can't, we have to keep lighting it up from three. Great shooting today by Azzi! Need this from her more consistently, especially if Sarah is struggling

I'm gonna post it again...another game where the refs looked at the halftime stats and made adjustments. At the half, Providence had committed 7 fouls vs 4 for UConn but the Friars had not attempted a FT. The third quarter starts and Providence was in the Bonus by the media TO. UConn was called for 9 fouls in the 3rd quarter, Providence 1. And with multiple trips to the FT line.
I have no idea what to make of our 4th quarter effort. Seemed like we were in a "prevent" offense.
Good games by Kaitlyn and Ashlynn for their offensive starts and Paige and Azzi for their scoring.
Time to watch some softball...

I can recall a post-Tenn loss when UConn was so pissed that it pasted Providence like 120-40. I was looking to see if this team would have that intensity to take out its frustration. Saw some evidence of that in the 1st three quarters so that was good.

Yup, we won. Too many missed layups and I really didn’t see crispness for lack of a better term. We’ll crush St John’s and let’s see what the SC game looks like. A win against SC puts us as 2 seed a loss a 3 seed…
