Well it's back to basketball and it's against the 18th ranked 12-0 Marquette Golden Eagles, 1:00 PM Sunday on SNY at the XL Center. Marquette has a Massey SoS of 75, has won two games against ranked teams, both on their home court. Their second game of the young season was against #23 Illinois and in their first conference game against conference #20 Creighton. They won the Illinois game 71-67 and the Creighton game 76-70, who is UConn's next opponent. This will be the Golden Eagles third road game of the young season, their first road game was against IUPUI, Massey rated #259, winning 92-58 and against Illinois St, Massey rated #99, winning 64-62. Both team's stat numbers match up almost evenly except for SoS, both have played only one team that is rated or would rated by Massey 300+, the highest ranked team that Marquette has played is Creighton while UConn has played 6 teams that were rated in the Top 25 at game time.

Marquette is a team that has no true center, their starting 5 consists of 4 Senior's and a Sophomore. Their tallest player is the 6'2" SR forward Liza Karlen that averages 28.8 min, 17.2 pts, and 7.6 rbds. Their other SR forward is Frannie Hottinger who is 6' averages 27.7 min, 9.4 pts, and 9.2 rbds. Their guards are SR Jordan King is 5'11" who averages 28.3 min, 15.3 pts, and 3.7 asts. SR Rose Nkumu is 5'7" who averages 31 min, 8.6 pts and 5 asts., and SO Mackenzie Hare is 5'9" averages 28.8 min, 15.8 pts and 2.9 asts. They have had 7 players play in all 12 games averaging 76.5 points out of the teams 80.9 points per game average, with only two players being underclassman, Hare and FR Skylar Forbes. Forbes is 6'1" averages 18.3 mins, 5.8 pts, and 4.4 rbds., the other 12 game player is JR Lee Volker who is 5'11" averages 16.3 mins, 4.4 pts, and 2.7 rbds.

  • I see a UConn having some problems with the Golden Eagles, but at the end they will wear them down and walk away with a conference win. UConn 89 - Marquette 74

This is a bad match up for Marquette and they will not be able to keep the score close. I expect UConn to be ready and play a complete game and win big.

It could be a bigger win if UCONN doesn't start rusty!

Some rust coming back from extended break will cause some issues early in the game (defensive lapses and shooting a little off) with a half time score of 35-32. But they will refocus in second half and win easily:

Uconn 83 - Marquette 68

I agree with those predicting rust, but UConn will prevail, abarely:
UConn 76
Marquette 73

If they don’t allow Hare to get going from 3, we should be just fine. Come out aggressive out the gate and take the early lead.
