Preseason AP Poll

A Texas Longhorn news item appeared on my Google page this morning that featured the announcement that Madison Booker is the SEC Preseason Player of the Year. Also that she is a member of the Preseason Conference First Team.
So...when does the BE announce their Preseason selections?

We must have been watching different games cuz Diana was def the point guard in 2003 and 2004
I think we must have been. Maria Conlon was clearly the pg on both those teams. Diana did so much more than what a pg is responsible for that it’s easy to mistake her for a pg in those seasons.

Similarly, Kaitlyn and KK were clearly the PGs last season. They clearly weren’t SGs. Still, folks could be forgiven for thinking it was Paige. But like Diana she mostly played off the ball. Of course, since she organized everything about the offense, it’s easy to think that made her the pg.

The irony is that there’s so much more to the PG position than people usually notice. It’s not just about bringing the ball up the court. But there was also so much more to Paige’s game, and Diana’s, that to call either of them a point guard really misses a lot about what they did for the team.

I agree any guard - and Sarah - can ably bring the ball up the court. But that’s not all a point guard does

There’s a reason there are separate point guard camps where pgs go in the offseason to improve their skills. A good pg can not only handle the ball she knows which offensive set to begin based on how the opponent is defending her teammates. She sees where to pass the ball, where to go if the defense shifts, and is already thinking of options if teammates have to rebound a missed shot. And that’s my rather simplistic description of how much is involved

A shooting guard, like Ash, is hunting shots rather than setting up the offense for other scorers. That’s her job, so to speak, like Azzi. The skill set might be similar but the mindset is different

Players really aren’t interchangeable. Just because a player is tall doesn’t mean she can play post. Remember when Geno had few post players and 6-3 Ann Strother played in the paint? It did not work . Coach can’t move players around that easily. Turing a SG or wing into a pg won’t work either
The mindset is certainly different. Yes, Ash's job is to hunt her shots and do her part in running plays. Geno will probably never sub-out KK for Ash. Having said that, I believe Ash's experience at PG in HS and her familiarity with the offense and basketball IQ would enable her to play PG in a pinch. I don't believe UConn would suffer greatly with Ash at the point. Are the better options at PG? I hope so, but you never know...

i only viewed the first 3 quarters of the BC exhibition (thanks to posts leading me to "azzi update" on utube). watched this morning and i am now confident that kayleigh will be fine as kk's replacement -- if it comes to that.

i don't know why all the concern about her arose in the postgame thread, except for the doom-hunters of the BY. it was her first game. i's glad i finally watched the game for myself this a.m.

BTW, why do some pooh pooh morgan as point guard? the huskies may never need it, but she was a super good PG in high school. i'd certainly prefer her over other emergency PG suggested.

Last year it was on 10/23. So probably sometime next week.

Yep. I felt I had a grasp of what Nika meant for the team. Without her they struggled.

I was hopeful when Ms Chin appeared until I heard her say “we didn’t play read & react at Princeton”!

Halfway through the season I was like. . . Thankful Ms Chin picked us for a year. To me she was Nika with a mindset of being the second or third scoring option not the fourth or fifth.

Watching the replay of the BC I saw a number of interesting things. The biggest to me was who is that wing or forward fowling their PG on the break?

Come to find out it’s GupGup! HolyCow she looks tremendously bigger than KK & Keylie. I was having flashbacks of Magic bringing the ball up court.

This is what our girls look like after 3 weeks??? 😎 👍

Actually we scored 70 in Columbia during our regular season matchup last December. Unfortunately the chickens scored 81.
I’m calling it now. Nov. 26 your Blue Devils will outscore SC and win a close game at Colonial Life Arena! No, no, don’t thank me. I just calls em as I sees em! 😎

I saw the Mitty v. Clackamas game on streaming a couple of years ago. I thought Morgan Cheli was clearly better than Jazzy Davidson (who was flashy) and McKenna Woliczko.

I saw that game too, and I share your assessment of Morgan. She is a viable pg — she’s got the quickness and her size gives her a special advantage — but most of all, she’s a natural floor general. This was easy to see in that game, and really in all the games from her senior season. I discount her as a pg candidate this season because of her injury situation. But I think it’s distinctly possible in future seasons. The game against LuHi that season is also quite revealing of her abilities, and Kayleigh is her opposite number in that one.

Duke may edge the Gamecocks November 26 but not at Colonial Life. The will play at Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas, home of the WNBA Champion Aces. Ya think Aja Wilson will be there supporting her alma mater?

How about making it a Vegas Aces Alumni match? A'ja's Gamecocks vs Chelsea's Blue Devils with them both as guest coaches on the sidelines. 😁

KK - experienced pg
Kayleigh - new teammates, new offense, more intense defense required. Effectively a freshman
Kelis - was in high school 5 months ago. Doesn’t know the offense and isn’t familiar with her teammates.
Azzi? Really, with Azzi expected to up her game after Paige’s graduation, she’s expected to score AND run the offense? And while she might bring the ball up the court from time to time, she hasn’t played point at all at UConn
Morgan - hasn’t played point since high school, hasn’t even recovered from last season’s injury

We are one twisted KK ankle from relying on an inexperienced pg
Very good points Nan. A good point guard is necessary to win big games. UConn has enough talent to get by however we need Kayleigh to gain experience quickly, Kelis to learn our system which will take time and KK to get better at running the point. Point guards need to be a threat to score, control the game, and not make turnovers. They are the general on the floor. Paige and Chen were very good at it.l As for Morgan she will need to get healthy and gain experience. My fear is Morgan is not ready and when will she be ready.

I think by the tournament, KK showed she was as good as Kaitlyn at running the point. I have no concerns about her. Kayleigh needs to get there, too, and like Kaitlyn she will need some time to get acclimated to a read-and-react scheme. I have every confidence she’ll figure it out soon enough. As for Kelis, I won’t expect anything from her this first year. She just needs to let the system percolate through her for a while.

I saw that game also (and a few other Mitty games against top H.S. opponents).
Morgan Cheli was the "glue"/ the floor "general". This is not to down grade
Davidson and Woliczko.... I just very happy to have Morgan as a HUSKIE!

My bad! Sorry, but I still think Duke will win that game!

I too think that Ash could handle the PG position not starting but certainly as a backup. When you look at her she seems to almost look like a "distributor" the way she handles the ball and moves.

Yup. It's not about downgrading anyone. It's about recognizing what their talents are. The fact is Morgan thinks like a pg, or at least she did at Mitty HS, and she probably can again. Jazzy is not that kind of player. She's a talented creator on offense and a clever defender. In that respect, she's a little like Paige was at Hopkins HS. But she doesn't think in terms of the entire floor, or at least she wasn't asked to do that at Clackamas HS. Maybe she'll develop more of that mindset at USC. But just to put this in perspective, Paige had that mindset when she first started at Hopkins HS in 8th grade. Morgan is not the offensive creator Jazzy is, but she's every bit the defender she is.

I am aghast at all the illogical postulation about our point guards. KK is the starter but has a serious mid range and 3 pt shot shooting problem. She drives well but needs to use her body more to shield her shot from being blocked. K9 is an outstanding backup and could vye for the starting role by the time March rolls around if her shooting is strong and KKs continues to whither. I have seen K9 play enough to feel her scrimmage against BC was an outlier. She’s got great court vision, a very good defender and handles the ball significantly better than those postulating about Morgan and Ash (thank gosh no one suggested Allie as a PG - not quick enough and good enough dribbler) who are not and never will be point guards at an elite school vying for a National title. Kelis is simply too green at this point but given time she could blossom given all the talent on this team.

Please stop the worrying, we are fine all over the court to recover from any injuries or “resting aspects”. Plus the injury Gods have punished us enough and have moved on to other teams…
