This not a good thing, yes I get it's just the motor city bowl and it's a "meaningless" bowl game. Look at how bad the NFL product was this year and yes I do believe there is a trickle down effect at the next level. Less games in college then more games in the nfl with the extra week will result in more injuries long term especially qbs.

The sport has gotten soft. I'm sorry I cannot sign off with the message that less football is a good thing

I dont think that's true, and if it is it's bad for UConn since one of the main things they're playing for is a chance to go to a bowl.

Bowls dont matter for some players, namely seniors with a shot at the NFL, but that's not most players.

I wish I was wrong, but the evidence aligns with my view. Teams opting out, players opting out, coaches opting out, all of it is relatively new, none of it is good for bowl games.

My prediction, it's only a matter of time before we see some players opt out of the CFP. Without meaningful monetary incentives to play in those games, why would some top NFL prospects on the cusp of big paydays take the chance?

A different situation, but we already saw a coach leave his CFP bound team for a payday. That certainly helps set a precedent.......it's all about the money!

I don't see much of a future for many of the bowls outside the CFP.

bowls need to matter to everyone, if they're gonna matter to anyone.
the only exceptions are army/navy/airforce.

besides those 3 programs, if you are a school who DOES care and you're constantnly being canceled on by teams that don't care, or who show up half-assed like UNC did in 2024 for us, then eventually you'll stop caring too. It only took us one year to stop caring.

So if we're going to keep trying to have bowls, something has to change to make the bowls desirable across the board, such that everyone who gets invited will 100% accept.

• NIL changes to include bowl participation incentives/penalties to players
• ensure portal stays closed until after CFP concludes, or at least until Jan. 1.

2024 UNC - we cared
2025 Army - we did not

(although in both cases, a head coach was lost by one of the teams, so that is a huge factor in the rosters being what they were for both games) - regardless i do believe even without a HC loss, the indifference by key players (which results in incomplete/lesser rosters suiting up for bowls, if the team attends at all) will make bowl season untenable moving forward.

The Motor City Bowl had great attendance when the bowl was sponsored by the Big 3 automakers and I think they liberally distributed tickets to employees and they would average ~50k fans for the game. When Little Caesars became the sponsor, attendance slipped into ~32k. When it became the Quick Lane Bowl and then the GameAbove Bowl, they averaged in the mid 20ks.

Actually if a few guys did that in the CFP, it would bring some rationality to the sport. I think it isn’t just NFL prospects sitting out bowls but also guys transferring.

I’m sure there are all sorts of reasons why it can’t work but changes that make sense are: that the portal opens after the championship game and that coaches can’t be signed until after the current Team plays its bowl game/CFP game. Basically mirroring the NFL. Wouldn’t stop draft related opt outs but I think it would limit the rest. When a coach leaves pre-bowl sacred have seen it leads to a stampede to the portal. If the portal was closed and the coach was still there I think way more guys would stay too.
