Pour out a Stroh’s for the Motor City Bowl…

I dont think that's true, and if it is it's bad for UConn since one of the main things they're playing for is a chance to go to a bowl.

Bowls dont matter for some players, namely seniors with a shot at the NFL, but that's not most players.
I wish I was wrong, but the evidence aligns with my view. Teams opting out, players opting out, coaches opting out, all of it is relatively new, none of it is good for bowl games.

My prediction, it's only a matter of time before we see some players opt out of the CFP. Without meaningful monetary incentives to play in those games, why would some top NFL prospects on the cusp of big paydays take the chance?

A different situation, but we already saw a coach leave his CFP bound team for a payday. That certainly helps set a precedent.......it's all about the money!

I don't see much of a future for many of the bowls outside the CFP.

bowls need to matter to everyone, if they're gonna matter to anyone.
the only exceptions are army/navy/airforce.

besides those 3 programs, if you are a school who DOES care and you're constantnly being canceled on by teams that don't care, or who show up half-assed like UNC did in 2024 for us, then eventually you'll stop caring too. It only took us one year to stop caring.

So if we're going to keep trying to have bowls, something has to change to make the bowls desirable across the board, such that everyone who gets invited will 100% accept.

  • NIL changes to include bowl participation incentives/penalties to players
  • ensure portal stays closed until after CFP concludes, or at least until Jan. 1.
like UNC did in 2024 for us,

Didn't Uconn do the same to Army?

which probably means it's only a matter of time before NIL gets milestone bonuses

correct.

as I said in my post - "it only took us one year to stop caring"

2024 UNC - we cared
2025 Army - we did not

(although in both cases, a head coach was lost by one of the teams, so that is a huge factor in the rosters being what they were for both games) - regardless i do believe even without a HC loss, the indifference by key players (which results in incomplete/lesser rosters suiting up for bowls, if the team attends at all) will make bowl season untenable moving forward.

The Motor City Bowl had great attendance when the bowl was sponsored by the Big 3 automakers and I think they liberally distributed tickets to employees and they would average ~50k fans for the game. When Little Caesars became the sponsor, attendance slipped into ~32k. When it became the Quick Lane Bowl and then the GameAbove Bowl, they averaged in the mid 20ks.

Actually if a few guys did that in the CFP, it would bring some rationality to the sport. I think it isn’t just NFL prospects sitting out bowls but also guys transferring.

I’m sure there are all sorts of reasons why it can’t work but changes that make sense are: that the portal opens after the championship game and that coaches can’t be signed until after the current Team plays its bowl game/CFP game. Basically mirroring the NFL. Wouldn’t stop draft related opt outs but I think it would limit the rest. When a coach leaves pre-bowl sacred have seen it leads to a stampede to the portal. If the portal was closed and the coach was still there I think way more guys would stay too.

What was once important and relevant in the sport’s world changes over time. When I was younger bowl games, NFL Pro Bowl and NBA All Star Game were all at their height. One has disappeared and the other two are trending downwards. C’est la vie.

The G5 should do their own playoffs. An 8 or 16 team home hosted playoff, finishing in a southern destination for the Finals, would be better for the fans anyway.

The CFP would contribute to it to make it profitable. The P4 have been paying the G5 not to sue for years, and there is no reason to think they won't keep paying.

The first year Penn State's backup QB opted out of their playoff run to enter the transfer portal and focus his energy there... he transferred to Missouri, where he then opted out of the Tigers matchup with Virginia in the Gator Bowl to once again transfer.... this time to Virginia

Bowls don't matter to the players, so why should they matter to fans? Give the players a financial incentive to play and maybe things will change. Otherwise, the playoffs or bust is the future.

It one last hurray for players. Most bowls have pretty nice swag bag for the players. There are events and they are made to feel like a big deal.

It's nice when you play somewhere that your nuts don't turn into icicles and fall off.

More bowl spitballing:

-> In one proposal shared with high-level administrators, a consortium of 10 bowl games — each pitting power conference programs — would be created and potentially sold on the open market, with its television rights controlled by the conferences themselves instead of the bowls. Presumably, these games will be played in existing bowls, but their participants would vary as the bowl system untethers from its traditional conference affiliations.

Could this mean an SEC team in the Alamo or Holiday Bowl? What about a Big 12 team at the Citrus or Gator?

What’s not to like? Five teams from each power league get tossed into a bucket, paired together based on attractive matchups, meet in interesting, new cities and make more cash than they currently generate. <-

It's so crazy how determined they are to destroy what the people before them built.

-> The two additional bowls in Puerto Rico and San Diego will both matchup Group of 6 programs, sources said. They help replace three bowls (Bahamas, Detroit and LA) that were canceled last year. <-

Where would the game be played in PR? We went for four days once and the food was incredible.
“An official site for the FBS bowl game has not been finalized, a source said.”

Fascinating. So, just when we thought bowl economics had arrived at cull the herd moment, the system says "not so fast my friend."

Is this just ESPN's calculus that any bowl has more value than no bowl or is this local economic development groups pushing for sports tourism? I guess its just the usual combo of both.

Looks like another missed opportunity to put a bowl game at the Rent.

What? The Holiday Bowl is great! Why are we starting new bowls and letting the Holiday Bowl wither?

They are seriously hollowing this thing out from the inside.

I agree on saving the traditional bowls before starting new ones that will fold in a few years. I know the bowls are more and more worthless, but at least keep the traditional bowls. The Holiday bowl is one of them. If you’re gonna let it go away and bring back the Poinsettia Bowl, let’s bring back the Blockbuster Bowl!!
