Possible Grad Transfers Next Year?

What I mean by Lucky is that you could get one and then not turn out to be the best fit. In Baylor's situation she would have been our starting SG, but with the dismissal of Morris she had to learn a new position that being PG. She has been vocal about how she was a SG and how hard it was at first when she started learning it. We got lucky that she got it down so quick and easily. Also, she wouldn't be where she is in this position without Mulkey's coaching.

As you might be able to tell I don't much believe in luck. I believe Chloe Jackson seized an opportunity. Let's not forget that Baylor had a highly recruited PG in its 2018 recruiting class.

well whether it's opportunity, hard work or good luck or a combination of all three I'll be thrilled if UConn can find a player or players that will contribute anywhere near to the same level as Chloe Jackson...........
 
Considering most players go to school year round and start classes the summer before their freshman year, my guess is a lot of juniors will be eligible grad transfers at the end of the summer, especially if they're motivated to finish up and transfer. There have been many success stories with grad transfers, so I'd bet the trend continues. Makes sense for players who want to play for title contenders and also for players buried on the bench who want to play. I'm sure many players see the openings at UCONN next year and Geno should have a great shot to land a good player or two.

Borislava Hristova from Washington St. is a redshirt Jr. this year, I think you could definitely throw her on this list. Just passed 1500 career points and is on track to become her school's all time leading scorer.

with all that success over time why would she want to transfer? Next year is not going to be vintage UConn where a trip to the semi-finals is guaranteed..............
 
Back to Ayanna Clark, her 2016 ESPN eval:"Physical low-post presence with nimble footwork delivers in the block; power block prospect with deceptive agility pounds the glass, yields a defensive presence in the key." At 6'3", she certainly seems to be exactly what we need. As for the baggage, let's recall that Caron Butler came to UConn with a ton of it. I hope Geno is giving Ayanna a serious look!

It is not guaranteed at Washington St. either. She would most likely have a better chance to at least play in the NCAA's with UConn.

better chance to make NCAAs with UConn but far more playing time with her teammates where she is now..............zero guaranty she's doing anything more then playing minutes off the bench here

Not sure I understand this discussion about "luck." When you evaluate grad transfers you have several years of performance, team interaction, and basketball and personal growth to base your decision. They are also typically physically stronger and have more basketball "smarts" and experience.
 
Stephanie Watts and Destinee Walker are a pair of UNC guards that could be grad transfers heading into next season, Watts is shooting 37% from deep on the year, Uconn could use a shooter on the wing.

We have no idea if any of these players want to transfer. Most of them will likely not!

Most of the discussion is me being stubborn, but consistent with my life philosophy that luck is far different from working your butt off and taking advantage of an opportunity. I understand fully what @DallasBUFan is trying to say.

luck in that a really good player, playing a position that you desperately need to fill just happens to be looking to transfer at the very same moment............what happens after that is where the recruiting skills come into play..............so UConn would be lucky if a powerful 6'3" forward who could score, pass, rebound and play good defense just happens to want to leave their present school for next season.............then if he wants her it's up to Geno to close the deal

I hope she stays and I'm not suggesting she's going to leave. As far as I know Coco was just compiling a list of 4th year juniors who potentially could be grad transfers for next year.

understood..............it's just that sometimes I get the sense that posters here believe these players would be crazy not to leave their schools for the great honor of playing one season for UConn................unless they are WNBA bound that may not be all that important to many.........
 
Unless we're talking about someone in the near-all american class, I don't think
Geno would want a transfer of the one and done variety. By the time she got up
to speed (if she got up to speed) in Geno's system, the season would be over, and
she'd be gone.

I doubt he would have taken Stevens if he had known she was going to bail on her
last year of eligibility.

Inserting someone into the lineup who doesn't know what she's supposed to do
fouls things up for the other four kids on the floor and would be a liability rather
than an asset.

For those with the talent there is a lucrative career that few degree holders see until they are much much older. What she will get at UConn is her best shot at a pro career. In Storrs she (and anyone else) gets to practice and scrimmage with/against a lot of eventual 1st round draft picks and gets far more exposure than she would get in Miami. And they practice at both ends of the floor unlike some elite programs who simply play to outscore their opponents. Family deaths are traumatic but most people are getting on with their lives within 6 months. I'm not denying her ties to her family, just not giving that factor as much priority as you.

Grad transfers tend to fall into coach's laps. Especially the elite types that UConn wants. I'm hoping that they fill the roster with 2/3 foreign players. Even if they don't hang around for more than a year or two. In fact I'd rather see more mature players who can fill roles right away.

Well WNBA bound 4th year juniors can skip being a grad transfer and just go ahead and enter the draft. Why wait another year?

Depends on what your draft position. Mompremier for example is projected to be a second round WNBA draft pick. Playing at UCONN for a year may raise her stock. Overall though I agree with what I think @Alydar maybe trying to say: I don't see a graduate transfer that is not WNBA bound helping UCONN very much. Keep in mind that the WNBA draft is 3 rounds deep.

Very few players with that experience are ready for the pros. You make my point. If a player needs to hone their skills and learn to play at a fast pace UConn is the place. How many times have we heard a player say that they picked UConn or transferred in because they want to be the best they can be and UConn will push them. I have read players say they picked other schools due to closeness to home or because of their "family atmosphere" but never because they believed that Coach Whoever would make them the best they could be.

of course but how many of those kind of players are there available? There were several last year but alas none ended up at UConn................
 
Not a single name on this thread worth the effort.

You need a year to integrate whoever walks in. It’s half wasted time. UConn grads come out as close to pro ready as there is in College. The player gets more than the program gets back from the player.

Commitments work 2 ways — if somebody at the talent level to compete at the highest levels commits to your program they deserve the full opportunity to develop. I be pissed if I were ONO, Walker and Williams.

Grad transfers and rent-a-players undermine development of the recruited talent. Ultimately, they will undermine the program itself.

This is a race to become just like everybody else, and the endpoint will be to become just like everybody else.
 
recruiting a 2019 player like ESPN #49 Faith Masonius would have made this conversation less necessary.................really good skills, fundamentally sound, great basketball IQ and better teammate..............always loved UConn where her brother was a UConn hockey player..............instead she'll be playing at Maryland next season............
