Popovich retires

Legend. As a person and a coach. Read a story a few months ago about former spur, Serbian Zarko Papalj who played briefly for Pop decades ago. Low minute guy who was having health troubles and Pop let him recuperate at his house in Texas about 30 years after he had any contact with Zarko in a professional capacity.

I mean, I'm sure the Spurs are comfortable with the guy they had in the interim, but now they're sorta stuck with him, without having had the opportunity to do a full search. Considering the last guy was there for 35 years, they might have wanted that opportunity.

Great coach, a bit of a crusty old dude and a horrible interviewee. I think him and Belichick took the same public speaking course.

I personally think that's part of his charm. And I disagree about comparisons to Belichick. Belichick famously says nothing, whereas Pop has had many epic rants stemming from his crustiness. He's authentic.

April was the time to go to SA. Not now.

My fun Pop tidbit. He was the basketball coach for my DIII school while I was a student there in the mid 80s.

Trivia question - without looking it up, who can name the schools (two colleges combined for their athletics) and or the mascot?

I don't know the answer but since you live in Southern California and it's the only DIII school I know of with 2 names I'm going with Pomona-Pitzer. I happen to follow DIII basketball because the school I went to held the record at the time for making the most consecutive DIII NCAA Tournaments with 12. Got to 2 Final Fours in my 4 years and lost in the championship game both times. Plus my kids both went to a DIII school who went to the NCAA Tournament a few times while they were there.

I thought he got fairly annoying in his later years with his constant lecturing off the court and then lecturing fans in the arena but I always liked him and he's one of the most successful coaches ever. I hope his health is okay and he has many more great years.

Pop earned the right to lecturing people on and off the court. He has a hand in making the game more global as a pioneer in evaluating international players to play in the league.

Legend. Both him and BB are authentic. I would sound like BB if i needed to talk to Boston sports radio meatheads every day.

Correct - Pomona Pitzer Sagehens. We were terrible at sports so our motto was "The Sagehens, the only animal that gives up when cornered."

You have mad DIII sports trivia skillz.

I just looked it up and the men's basketball team has never made the NCAA Tournament. Not once! I was surprised at that. I remember the baseball team was decent. I'm also familiar with the schools because my younger son looked at Claremont McKenna.

I feel bad for the guy. He must not be well if he's retiring right now with Wemby, Castle and a high pick this year. The Spurs are set up for a decade long run if they play things right.
