Poor fan showing at Gampel

Bottom line, all of these reasons are excuses....

The fans need to be loud and proud... and the students need to organize and get crazy.....
As someone who has lived in the state for 49 years, anyone who claims they aren't able to believe that sometimes folks are late for something because they hit traffic that is beyond what can reasonably be anticipated is either (i) a liar or f(ii) a total idiot.

I'm sorry, that was unfair. It is possible you could be both.

-a lot of issues that are hard to fix but allowing students to transfer seats again needs to happen immediately. If they can come up with something better for next year to make sure the student seats are full by the biggest fans than great but the current setup is terrible

-I sit in the corner kind of overlooking the student section and it does look like they have some people in the front row trying to lead stuff. Saturday even saw someone during one of the late timeouts running up the stairs telling people to stand up when they were sitting down The bigger issue is the passion of the student body. Defense especially you don’t need much leadership, you yell OOOOOOO the whole time on defense ideally while jumping up and down, it’s not that hard

-Cooley should shut his mouth. Hurley probably only spoke out after this game because he was asked and he was probably only asked because of what Cooley said. That said, two things can be true, Hurley has been visibly frustrated on the sideline with the crowd noise a bunch of times this year not just Saturday. And he’s spoke out before about fans not being in the game until late when it’s close.
Cooley baited Danny and he swallowed the bait. Hurley should have told him to worry about the 3000 fans in Georgetown arena

Getting into a back and forth with clown like ed Cooley would have been the definition of taking the bait

And again, this was the strongest Dan has criticized the crowds but it’s far from the first time

Per my daughter- they release them at exactly 10PM on a night approx 1 week before the game. They are gone fairly quick.

Maybe one thing they could do is release them in person at the ticket office or somewhere first, so especially for the biggest games those willing to line up early or at least go in person can guarantee themselves tickets, and then after that initial window release the rest online.

And then if not allowing them to be transferred have a way to return them to the ticket office so they can be re-released online, with some sort of penalty if tickets get claimed but then not used or returned

I agree as I saw ESPN pick up that story and it was nothing to do with the game just a hit piece on our supposed attendance issue? That was it…. A nothingburger which I am surprised it got the attention it did - both in the press and here as well.

Meanwhile the press could be writing about many other topics… Like…

When did Syracuse become such a laughingstock in basketball?

Or why did all the Big East defectors fizzle for the most part with the exception of maybe -the late to join and early to leave -U of Miami?

I would rather read an article on how teams like BC, Pitt, Syracuse, and others who supposedly hit pay dirt when they left are now an afterthought in the NCAAs now. A footnote that no one seems to care about anymore.

Way back when in the Big East - all these teams were teams to be reckoned with - now they seem like the “kick around” teams of the ACC conference - it’s actually a bit cringeworthy…. Especially Pitt, BC + Syracuse.. they used to be real contenders….

That would be a disaster, then all the seating you see on TV would be empty.
Not if the right (kind of) students are getting access to side court seating. Unfortunately, student tickets these days are being claimed by the Instagram crowd. lookmeee! lookee mee! pose, pose, pose

And honestly, the people inhabiting those seats now could be replaced by covid cutouts and no-one would notice a difference. So yeah...putting students in those seats would be an upgrade.

Yes I know. Jeff was an empty suit, Lew is his predecessor and the one that made radical changes with the season ticket program.
Pretty sure it was Hathaway, but it was a while ago so you may be right.

.-.
Do your job AD and get us into a real Power Conference yesterday. Basically, Danny and Geno are doing your job for you. If either unexpectedly left, the Basketball Program would be in a world of hurt.

Playing small garbage Midwest teams that no one cares about like Creighton. Butler, Marquette , Xavier, Depaul is not a long-term solution.

This team is just not fun to watch. That doesn’t mean they aren’t great and don’t win, but they don’t fast break, dunk or go on big runs. Every game they’re on the edge of breaking it open and they give up a three or an easy bucket and you can feel the crowd exhale.
True, its like watching a Tony Bennett-coached game at UVA!

to be fair, they did renege on the “forever” seats promise. I’m not privy to the data but maybe they lost more hardcore fans than expected.
Agree one million percent. Our seats last few years were behind the visitor bench, 3 rows back. We lost those and are about 8 rows higher. Those in lower seats are never the same people. The fans are now different - they are corporations and their guests, etc. - not the same passion or excitement. They need to treat some of the longer term, lower level donors like all-American better. They’re going to lose the attendance of true fans which has an effect.

Even leaving the game in Hartford last week - Hurley would not allow fans to leave until the court was cleared - as press conferences were being given, etc - so donors who normally have access to walk along the court to leave through the garage had to wait 25 mins. Not a great way to treat fans.

This is all very concerning. I feel like something similar happened to the Red Sox after their run of success. They had a passionate fan base, Fenway was packed, the crowd was awesome and then it started to change. More people came as a Social event, prices continually increased, and now in stead of Red Sox fans invading other stadiums, other fan bases can come and make noise at Fenway.

Something has to change. Hurley has done everything possible to turn this program around. And yet it feels like he may be more and more inclined to walk if it continues this way. In the next couple of years big programs could be looking for a new head coach, UNC, Kentucky, Kansas. Hurley and UConn are a perfect fit. Something has to change because nobody wants to go back to the post
2014 days.
Ha, ha, NO! He gets paid as much as anyone in college basketball, and deep down he KNOWS he’s not going to fit at Kentucky or Kansas. I don’t see him leaving the Northeast for another college coaching job, UNLESS he believes that he can’t sign the players he wants.

Quite annoyed by Hurley. It isn’t a fan problem, it is a university distribution issue. Tickets weren’t easily available to transfer from students to another student, and, seats are on sale on secondary market and never get bought. the prices aren’t cheap, which makes no sense if there are empty seats. What’s going on?

Lastly, style of play does affect audience reaction. This is not Hurley’s fault. The team is 24-2 and in the Big East they kind of slowly create a small lead of 6-12 points, and play the game even there. Is it boring? Yes. They just aren’t explosive, which is weird.

I chalk it up to they are way more talented than their opponents and the margin of error is so big there is no need for them to lock in. They almost seem bored with the Big East competition. St John’s is a different story. But, the league is nowhere near St. John’s and UConn this year.

I visited Michigan State this year as part of my Operation 351 journey. The students around the lower level were going absolutely crazy before the game end during the game. Those fans were proactive fans. Our students are reactive and wait for Hurley waving his arms or some crazy dunk to go crazy. Not sure why that is but it’s sad to see an entitled fan base like us.
