Poor fan showing at Gampel

Time to shrink the student section? Either 1) lower bowl behind both baskets only, or 2) upper & lower behind one basket only? Many more seats to sell either way. PBA-style bar(s) in upper bowl section(s) perhaps?

The bar in Gampel would be a huge hit.

Wasn't Hurley's complaint just about the student section this past Saturday? Were there other empty seats? I guess someone needs to ask the students who had those tickets and didn't go to the game why they didn't go. We used to love Saturday night games. Drink before the game. Go to the game. And then go out after the game. Perfect Saturday night on campus.

He's complained about empty seats before. He doesn't think there should ever be an empty seat with the success he's had. I don't think its a fair assessment. Of course, college kids are going to sign up for free tickets and then not go. That's a given, they get distracted. Make the kids pay for them and make them transferrable. Who cares if a kid sells his ticket to another student for $20-$50?

As far as the rest of the seats go, they are just too expensive for average people. Its a high end event these days.

Yes, those empty seats are due to people being priced out rather than Season ticket holders, not showing up, then the question is whether the existing model optimizes the total raised income.

Back in the 90s basketball tickets were extraordinarily difficult to get and houses were packed consistently. Then athletic Director Jeff Hathaway decided to make a money grab by dramatically in increasing prices in breaking some of the practices with season ticket holders of the time. It was a catastrophically bad decision that alienated the people that were the biggest fans. It seems like history has repeated itself with the whole lifetime seat debacle. For a university that has a very solid school of business, we make some extraordinarily bad decisions from time to time.

Once the fans stand up its the kiss on death. My son and I have been saying this all year.
I have come to the conclusion that the team needs to earn our cheers and screaming. These guys get paid more than most of the hardcore fans (Karaban $1mm) and certainly Dan makes more than most. I find ugly it that he gets angry at the fans for not screaming all the time.

1. While I will always love the Huskies this version plays ugly and lack of fast breaks and dominance in the paint make them a head scratcher. Case in point the end of both Georgetown games we had to hang on to win. This is not the fans' fault at all!

2. Prices our out of control. We live in one of the most expensive States and we are constantly asked to up more and more. I realize it's the reality in today's "college" sports but coming from Fairfield County and driving up to Gampel can be a real pain. But we do it regardless.

3. I sit around people I don't recognize especially at Gampel. They get their refreshments in the back rooms, and I can tell know little about the team let along basketball. Even had Providence fans sitting next to me at Providence game, evidently, they knew somebody. This should not be allowed a few rows behind the bench.

4. Student tickets should be a nominal payment and allowed to transfer so there is a fanny in the seat.

5. As I mentioned previously Dan's parents weren't at the game Saturday. Maybe its personal matter or matter Georgetown (Big East teams) not worth the time and effort to drive up from NJ.

6. Hartford has been a much better venue and rocks. The refurbishment is great and makes it far more enjoyable experience plus easier drive with more places to eat.

7. Big East refereeing is atrocious. I watch Mullens and Solo run around and get held all the time. This brand of basketball is bad for the conference. Maybe they are afraid we will run away from everybody but isn't better to have a team in the conference that dominates the sport? My take is we would have won against St. Johns in MSG if the game was called like in other conferences. We will be better in the tournament when the style of refereeing will be consistent with basketball and not rugby.

8. Finally, our defense is suffering due to the ridiculous foul calling against us. Players seem tentative to after the ball because they get called all the time. We need Stewart and Ross to perform when out there. I trust they will come around.

Go Huskies

This happened to me two years ago, so Dave is correct. I caught on before the game and got a refund plus site credit to stubhub though. No idea if the seller got punished. I’m pretty sure they told students to never sell to non-students.

-a lot of issues that are hard to fix but allowing students to transfer seats again needs to happen immediately. If they can come up with something better for next year to make sure the student seats are full by the biggest fans than great but the current setup is terrible

-I sit in the corner kind of overlooking the student section and it does look like they have some people in the front row trying to lead stuff. Saturday even saw someone during one of the late timeouts running up the stairs telling people to stand up when they were sitting down The bigger issue is the passion of the student body. Defense especially you don’t need much leadership, you yell OOOOOOO the whole time on defense ideally while jumping up and down, it’s not that hard

-Cooley should shut his mouth. Hurley probably only spoke out after this game because he was asked and he was probably only asked because of what Cooley said. That said, two things can be true, Hurley has been visibly frustrated on the sideline with the crowd noise a bunch of times this year not just Saturday. And he’s spoke out before about fans not being in the game until late when it’s close.

Jeff? I think you mean Lew.

That was Dan's polite answer.

The correct answer could have easily been "Hey Ed, try not to come in here with a crappy team again"
Hurley needs to ask his boss some questions about the forever seats, be reminded by Andrea that the game was scheduled on Valentine’s Day. As for Cooley, perhaps the day doesn’t have much meaning given how he left Providence.

Jeff? I think you mean Lew.
Two different people, Jeff Hathaway and Lew Perkins. Hathaway followed Perkins.

The student tickets should not be 100% free. Add a nominal cost, like $5-10 and only studnets who really want to go will buy them.
What is hapenning now is kids are logging in, getting their free ticket in case they want to go and then not going. Students tickets are also currently non transferable even between students. makes no sense.
The student ticket process needs to be built to attract real student fans not those with a casual interest. Hurley needs to talk to his boss about the rest - so many self inflicted bad decisions based on short term not long term cash flow. Never underestimate the long term value of loyalty.

How exactly does the online claim process work now? And like is it a situation where all tickets are gone within minutes and legit fans do miss out, or do all the seats go eventually but anyone who really wants to go has plenty of time to claim seats?

.-.
Good God. You know what the coaching staff is going to see if they look in the mirror? I’m guessing they’ll see that they are coaching a team that is 24-2 and in position to win the Big East regular season and get a #1 seed in region. In our 6 championship years, the record was only matched in ‘99. If you can’t get into that, it’s not on the coaches and players. You should look in a mirror.
I get that but it’s mid February and we have not fixed the issues that we will need to improve on to close out the year well when playing elite teams. The negative fallout from the high hedge impacts, successful inbounds plays, less dumb fouls or doing a better job of putting them in position to foul less and rebound more, weakside rebounding, awareness of your teammates scoring sweet spots, turn the fast break transition switch after turnovers or rebounds, improved foul shooting from the center position.

I believe it’s an online queue. But I don’t know the exact nature. Like is it a random email blast/first come first serve or is it more lottery or is it a set time that you just need to be prepared for.

Not to go on a tangent but I feel like anlmost everything for events has gotten so expensive, concerts etc, so not unique to us. But don’t have data or know if it’s a regional thing, just my experience.

I really don't think UConn has ever had the fanbase of other big Teams. I mean we defefinitely don't travel. We have been outnumbered greatly in Final Fours. I still remembr to this day the 2011 final four in Houston and we had local college students filling up our student section. Just pitiful there isn't a bigger following from our students and state. I know we are a small state but we have no professional teams and really on UConn baskeball for pride. I think the UConn women have a bigger following which is sad.
You live in the state of Ct who can afford to go a final four?

You don't think they're working on foul shooting? That they don't notice that they're not able to get the ball in against pressure and working on it? You really think Hurley, having accomplished what he has, is going to change the way we play D which includes high hedges because some speculate maybe we'd be even more effective defensively if we played it differently?

As I said, I fully agree that this team isn't playing well enough right now to get to the Final Four (although they are playing well enough to get a 1 seed). Most likely, that's because we're not good enough. The most important thing we need to do to be much better isn't schematic. It's that we need more of the 9 guys who play every day to play well EVERY day, so that on any day at least 4 starters and 3 subs shows up and is materially contributing. And the biggest piece of that is playing well most of the time when Solo and Braylon are on the court together.

This is deflection by Dan.

Georgetown stinks. It's 8pm on Valentine's Day. Outside of St. John's and Nova, the league is not good this year and doesn't move the needle.

When we played a very good team, Arizona, it was a great crowd. The crowds in Boston and NYC were pretty great.

This is a problem nationwide unless it's an elite matchup.
And yet the game came down to the final minute

Ed should worry about his own house. He can't even fill a high school gym.
Yep that's my take, but he's been poking at Uconn fans since Providence to keep his own loudmouth fans preoccupied. (Especially from a fraud like Ed with like what, 3 NCAA wins in 20 years of coaching ?) I'll agree "that student section" empty and overall maybe more than normal at game time. But it was mostly filled in 15-20 minutes into the game. And did Dan even know what the traffic was like getting to Gampel with RT 32 shut down ?

Bottom line, all of these reasons are excuses....

The fans need to be loud and proud... and the students need to organize and get crazy.....

When you have all those options, it’s tough to sell a game against Georgetown or Butler, especially at $100-$500 per ticket. Honestly, if I told my family we were gonna get pizza and go to the UConn game and it was going to cost me $1000 or more for the 5 of us, they’d tell me they’d rather go snowboarding or go the mall with their $200. Even kids can see the pricing is absurd.

Is it really that much? Good seats at the empty Capital One Arena can be had as low as $9 on the resale market for Georgetown's next game.

You guys aren't exactly a must see these days and that's a big building. We are just doing everything we can to afford to maintain a championship program but sometimes the juice isn't worth the squeeze.
