I feel like this is beating a dead horse. Staff misjudged Mahaney, Nowell has been injured too much to develop, and we’re razor thin (and paying for it) because of it. Not much to do about it this year except hope Diarra can get healthy.
Which probably won't happen with him playing 36 minutes a game. Rock meet hard place.

It cannot be salvaged at this point unless somehow Mahaney becomes Cam Spencer. All the chips were pushed in on AM becoming the second point guard but he’s just not it.

Whenever Nowell gets back, I hope he gets the lion’s share of the minutes because next year is going to be a similar slog if he’s not up to the job on day one. And have Solo carry a basketball with him everywhere he goes this summer.

The starting pg next year is currently on another roster. They will go portal for a pg

How do you go into the season with Hass and a Freshman for point options. HOW?
We didn’t, we had the kid from St. Marys from the portal who Dan Hurley wanted above every other point guard in the portal. This season is on Dan Hurley. Where was Stewart in the second half, AK is almost not playable. He’s a ghost out there, nonexistent on offense and defense. He’s invisible. Can’t shoot anymore, can’t defend me and I’m 73, he just floats around not having any positive impact on the game. Last year he was the 5th concern for opposing defenses so he got the worst front court defender now they are playing attention to him and he’s been exposed as slow, non athletic, slow release on his shot, slow on his drives to the rim and can’t guard anyone. He’s invisible on offense and defense but he played the entire second half and I don’t think Stewart sniffed the court. Even when things were starting to get away late second half AK was nonexistent. It’s like playing 4 on 5 he contributed nothing and he’s supposed to be a team leader. Great guy nice person but a major disappointment for the sole returning starter from last season.

Probably not all that productive an input, but Pettiford at Auburn is killing it. Having a Bazz-like freshman year, and he’s too small to go pro very soon. That was Hurley’s option A at point guard - he’d definitely help this team

Hurley should 100% be bringing this around to the school/boosters. We can not be getting outbid on his number 1 option at any point.

Let’s be honest when you’re real good 6th man is logging 30 minutes plus this was never a good situation. Add an injury to that’s it’s downright criminal. Not taking away the effort that HD has put in but he’s just not championship PG material unless it’s off the bench. Bad situation that won’t get better without some portal luck!

We were so fortunate to have Newton for 2 years!

I wonder if they try Liam at pg just try an spell a couple minutes for Hass
That's my thoughts as well. Hass needs reduced minutes for sure. Liam at the point would actually improve the effectiveness of the offense because with a shorter point guard that can't throw over taller defenders nor drive the ball into the paint, the offense gets clogged and forced to heave prayers at the end of shot clocks.

I'd do long stretches of Liam, Solo, Stewie, Alex, and Tarris. Drive the ball more with Liam to get buckets/draw fouls and get more open looks for Solo, Stewie, and Alex with better ball movement via better court vision.

Let’s not forget that numerous top flight programs including Duke and UK wanted Mahaney as well. So this wasn’t some huge miss by our staff. I remind myself that he’s only had two years of lower level ball under his belt as opposed to a Cam who came here in year 5 after a year in big boy ball. And our staff was at least initially asking him to do more than what Cam was asked. His frame and athleticism, compared to a Newton… he may always have some degree of limitations unless he does nothing but work his ass off this postseason to become as heady a player as possible. It’s just not going to be a microwaved process like a lot of people here seemed to think it would. Would be interesting if Hurley ever shares his thoughts on how the PG position turned out this season

But that is only one of several issues with how the season has panned out. This was not guaranteed to be a great season for us. I’m glad I never got myself too heavily invested in this season
