Even Duke is having problems selling out. Sure, there are certain big games that might be bigger or less big in a given year, but do you think those games are mob scens if say Ohio State and Duke were banned from the tournement? I don't. It is largely because the NCAA has created this monster, called March Madness. for major programs it is relatively easy to get in, and it captivates the public imagination for the better part of a month. The regular season, by contrast is, in many people's minds, a long drawn out and not particularly meaningful undertaking. Its like the 1st 2 days of a golf tournament. Who cares if NC State loses to Maryland? As long as both win a certain number of games, both get to go on for the real prize. And when the real prize is taken away, the season becomes effectively a series of exhibition games in people's minds.
