Nneeka Ogwumike......32 points, 15 rebounds vs Oregon.

Watch out for the Cardinal this year!

Oregon lost to Denver by 24 points earlier this season. Nneka is a great, great player, and she had a command performance against Tennessee, but I don't see those numbers against Oregon being measurably more impressive than EDD's output agaist Towson.

Griner is going to win the AP NPOY. Nneka might win the Wade trophy given the criteria of that award.

We could have 3 unanimous AP AAs this year. Maybe even more.

No to be a smart ass but I don't see any of our girls putting up those kind of numbers against some of the cupcakes we play.
I don't think anyone is arguing that any UConn player is in the running for NPOY this year.

If she and Griner remain in close contention, a possible Baylor-Stanford match-up in the future just might be decisive.

...in a close game over a team that lost to North Texas.

And Needing 29 shots to do it. Meantime EDD has averaged 38.5 points and 12.0 rebounds in her last two games while only taking 24.0 shots.

Pretty sure NPOY is voted on before the NCAA tournament.

Totally agree.
There's a part of me that's inclined to agree. But when I see the numbers that EDD is putting up, I have to wonder. Gun to the head so to speak, yeah I'd have to go with Griner. But, not having seen EDD, I just don't know. I'm going to see Delaware play Northeastern in a week, so I'll have more of an opinion after that.

Nneka's no slouch either, and like the other two she's having a year like few have ever had, but I feel like I've seen enough of her and Griner to give a clear not do BG for the reason you mention.

Nneka has expanded her game this year, big time, including the ability to knock down 10-15 ft shots. I don't care if it's against TN, OSU, USC, or whoever. The offensive moves she makes and SKYing for rebounds, snatching the ball with one hand, are jaw dropping. She does this while being double and tripled teamed.

so, being 6'8" and swatting balls changes the game. She does not have the same offensive skills set as Nneka or EDD. She gets POY for being tall? ugh

There have been other 6'8" players. (Remember Alyssa Dehahn at Michigan St. or that kid at Liberty in the early 00s? Probably not, because neither was that good.) None of them has been remotely as dominant defensively as Griner. She completely controls the middle, and a team has to completely adjust to account for her.

yeah, I get that. Just think Nneka offers more.

GrIner won the genetic lottery, but she has developed real skills. She stays out of foul trouble, while blocking shots. She also scores and makes FTs. As talented as Stanford is, Nneka is carrying them this year. EDD, who had 40 today, may be even more skilled and is carrying her team even more.

My vote for NPOY? Too early to say, but I really like all of the top 3.

EDD has more weapons with her 3 pt shot, but I haven't seen her make the moves and leaps as Nneka, and of course EDD and Nneka don't have Griner's height.

EDD is not super strong or quick. But she has some nice spin and up-and-under moves. She also shoots 92% on FTs. They are different, but both Elena and Nneka are very, very good. I'd like to have both on my team.

Ms Griner gets player of the year for using her height to tremendous advantage. She is an impact player plain and simple. It takes nothing away from Ogwumike and her abilities. She is outstanding.

Since when do you give a player extra credit for being shorter or take points away for being taller? Of course her height helps her...it usually does help a post player. How many of the all-time great post players have been short?

Nneka is a great player, but to imply that Griner is good just because she is tall indicates that you have either not been watching her play or you have limited basketball IQ.

Nneka would have a tough time getting off a shot against Griner in the paint. She is 5 inches short and as well as she jumps, she is not going to get many points in the paint if Griner is guarding her. Griner would easily get her shot off against Nneka, just like she does against Glory Johnson, who has similar physical skills.

Do this...put Nneka and Griner in a mock draft and see how many pick Nneka over Griner. And see which of these two players may make the Olympic team.

I am in no way disputing Nneka's talents, and I am sure she will get some votes for POY, but anyone who really watches the game will be voting for Griner due to her defensive capabilities. She is simply a force like no other in women's basketball.
