Wow. I've never seen a coach announce his retirement date 5 years in advance.

This was done for no other reason than for him to get his name into the spotlight.

I've never seen Pitino tell the truth about things like this. I'd put money on him coaching past that season.

Pitino will do whatever he ca to have espn.com blog about him.

You'll see him working in some way associated with basketball in the future i.e. he is going to keep working, he just doesn't want to coach. They'll have him come into the studio to make NCAA predictions just like last year.

Apparently, there's no such thing as too much publicity in Pitino's book. Remember all the smack he talked after he got beat by Moorehead state? And then all the stuff he was saying over the offseason? The guy just cannot resist being in the spotlight.

Oh I agree. I just can't think of another reason he'd feel the need to come out with this info.

ESPN article notes that Pitino is the only men's basketball coach to take 3 teams to the final four. It would seem that they, too, don't count the Squid's forays with UMass and Memphis that were vacated. Dontcha just love it???
