Wow. I've never seen a coach announce his retirement date 5 years in advance.

This was done for no other reason than for him to get his name into the spotlight.
 
I've never seen Pitino tell the truth about things like this. I'd put money on him coaching past that season.
 
Pitino will do whatever he ca to have espn.com blog about him.

You'll see him working in some way associated with basketball in the future i.e. he is going to keep working, he just doesn't want to coach. They'll have him come into the studio to make NCAA predictions just like last year.
 
His team is 12-0, don't see why he would need extra publicity.

Apparently, there's no such thing as too much publicity in Pitino's book. Remember all the smack he talked after he got beat by Moorehead state? And then all the stuff he was saying over the offseason? The guy just cannot resist being in the spotlight.

Must be something to do with being in Kentucky. Calipari is the same way.

Oh I agree. I just can't think of another reason he'd feel the need to come out with this info.
 
Why would you come out and state this publicly? Good luck recruiting players in 3 years!
