Well by signing that extension Pikiell either had no interest in the UConn job or was told through intermediaries that UConn would not be entertaining a move toward him in the next few years if they make a change. Between Ollie's buyout and Pikiell's buyout on top of what it would cost to pay Pikiell, that clearly isn't happening.
Looks to me like Rutgers was sweating losing him, so they ante'd up.
From Pikiell's perspective, there's no way you can turn that down in hopes of the UCONN job. One, you gotta wait on Ollie to be fired, and two, you have to beat out other very viable candidates once the job is open. Way too much money to not cash in. Especially for what is effectively a slim chance.
