Pikiell signs long-term extension with Rutgers

Looks to me like Rutgers was sweating losing him, so they ante'd up.

From Pikiell's perspective, there's no way you can turn that down in hopes of the UCONN job. One, you gotta wait on Ollie to be fired, and two, you have to beat out other very viable candidates once the job is open. Way too much money to not cash in. Especially for what is effectively a slim chance.

this is Rutgers we're talking about here, they're going to put a banner up when this season is over.

It's a pretty good contract. UCONN would have to offer way more to entice, not to mention buyout. Not possible.

Guaranteed $2.5 million per year plus performance bonuses is close to Ollie’s contract. He’s not leaving Rutgers.

They're 110th in Kenpom and 1-4 in conference play. No chance they make the tournament. If they go .500 in conference play I'd be impressed. Pikiell can coach so it's feasible.
 
Rutgers figured out that they had the coach they wanted...finally. They extended Steve to keep him. UConn's situation had nothing to do with it.

Those two ideas aren't mutually exclusive. In fact, one could likely influence the other.

They were in year 2 of a 5 year deal. They didn't need to do anything. The only issue was that tiny buyout. So yeah, they were worried about somebody snatching him up.

UCONN is the very obvious one (given his alum status and location) of a number of potential landing spots. There's a reason UCONN got a mention in a few different articles. Was it all UCONN? Course not. Fact remains they didn't want to get poached.

Could be, but not 100% sure about that.

UConn athletics director David Benedict has not made a public declaration regarding the job security of men's basketball head coach Kevin Ollie. However, another school may have fired a shot that suggests Ollie's job is indeed in jeopardy.

This week, Rutgers announced a contract extension for second-year head coach Steve Pikiell, who went a modest 15-18 last year and was 11-6 this year at the time he signed the extension. Why is that relevant? The 50-year-old Pikiell is a Connecticut native and former Huskies' guard who began his career as a Jim Calhoun assistant. If Ollie were to be fired, Pikiell would've been on Benedict's short list.
