Phil Knight Invitational/Legacy Tournaments - November 24-27

Interestingly is the Phil Knight Legacy bracket (UConn) has the final scheduled for 10:00 AM on ABC!. Wake up, have breakfast, watch hoop and then get ready for Football.

It does look like the tournament seeded the teams so 1 plays 4 and 2 plays 3 in both brackets. The finals according to chalk would be UConn/Iowa and Oregon/Iowa State. So while NC has surprised with a high AP/Coaches ranking 8/10, I think the event planners thought Oregon would be the better team over the summer and frankly, I still think Oregon is the better team. Should be some great games.

Want to see some "upsets"!

How has your team looked after all the defections? On the bright side, you can say hello to Kennedy Brown and Taya Corosdale on Friday....

I like all the new players, talented freshmen group. It will be a success for OSU Beavers if they finish in the top 6 of PAC-12 this season because of how much "new" & "inexperience". The future is bright as long as long as we don't have any serious injuries or portal transfers out.

That's 1 pm eastern time :)

Still trying to figure if Cyclones were that good or if Michigan State was that bad on Thursday. Might find out on Sunday that's it's a bit of both. Spartans post defense was awful. Cyclone newcomer Soares had a huge game but I am still looking to see her against a post defense with a pulse. Fun for Iowa State hoop fans that both the men and the women play North Carolina in Portland. Such a nice break from non-conference cupcakes or WBB tournaments played in a hotel gym in Cancun or Gilligan's Island resort and spa.

Both sides of the tourney (men's and women's) in Portland would have been fun to have watched in person. Would have been a good road trip.

Nice win for your guys Friday. We were at a pizza joint in Florida and the folks there were rooting for ISU

Your prize is a game with the UConn men

I think both ISU being that good and Michigan State being that bad is true for that game. Watching Michigan State versus Oregon today, it's hard to say where Michigan State is yet.

Oregon had 17 point lead at one point but end up winning by 6. Sure Kyei got a double double but Michigan State did something right to make it a close game in the end.

ISU hasn't yet played a ranked team and most of the teams they have played are pretty forgetable - Northern Iowa or Michigan State are the best team they have played.

UNC will definitely be their toughest test. I think UNC has a size advantage in some positions which could make guard play interesting. Looking forward to this game.

Actually ISU has the height advantage for what it's worth but I don't see it being a big deal. Soares has had height in all of our games so far but hasn't played against a team yet with even a pulse at post, either offense or defense. Michigan State's post defense was just terrible. I don't know anything about Anya Poole, can some of the UNC fans fill me in?

Ashley Joens was back from a dislocated shoulder and bout with the flu. She looked ill (IMHO) when sitting on the bench. Hope the couple of days between games gets her feeling more towards normal.

So
I thought Utsby and Williams were taller. My bad.

Not much insight on Poole, but I'd keep my eye on Key when she comes off the bench. Much more athletic than her sister. Impressed with how she played against Oregon.

I think that playing without their leading scorer (playiing for the Swedish national team) and shooting something like 28% on Thursday (and not because ISU was great defensively) was likely to lead to a major swing of the pendulum in the opposite direction (and it did, with one player who had only 3 3's last season matching, or maybe outdoing, that today. Plus--consistency for this Oregon team is clearly a work in progress. The major step forward here was that they won the second half of the fourth quarter fairly decisively; had they played that well (then) Thursday, they would have won that game as well. As for your compatriot, PK, she's had her best two games against the best two teams Oregon has played so far, and with some serious effort all around to get her the ball as much as possible--for points, obviously, but also to speed up her development as much as possible. And it seems to be working.

So

It turns out guard play hard more impact than height tonight in this game. For as much as Utsby is listed at 6'1", she seems bigger to me on the court. Great match up against Joens. Loved watching them compete against each other.

Credit to Soares managing the extra minutes in this game. She hasn't been asked to do that yet this season. A positive sign for ISU with conference play coming soon.

Ha, I was thinking the same about Utsby, she played "bigger" than that. UNC guards just swarmed the slower Cyclones in the 2nd half. Fennelly teams are always ready for a good game of H-O-R-S-E but don't like it much when good defense is thrown in there. It's why they have never gotten past Baylor to win the Big 12 in last 20 years. Baylor is not Baylor this year and Texas may not be playing to their expected level so they may sneak a title in this year but they are overrated at #5. I think of Iowa State as more in the 11-15 range.

Great description. Their match up with Iowa coming up soon should be a great one to watch.
