That’s messed up. Brooks is a good coach, but for some reason raises my internal alarms.

While I disagree with Brook's decision, he was brought on to win and bring in talent into the program that was in shambles. He had no ties to her who was actually recruited by Matthew Mitchell way back then. He let her stay last season, but I think it's pretty clear he is trying to upgrade the roster through the portal.

Definitely not a decision that has went over with fans, especially in eastern Kentucky where she is from, but college athletics are a business now so I get his perspective.

Strange. Only reason coaches should be doing this (given the number of openings) is if the player is an active detriment to the program.
Totally agree. The program made a promise to this kid, and it looks like Kenny broke this promise. Maybe he should have counted how many players he had before making so many offers. Rowe was a starter half of last season, but Brooks obviously doesn’t like something about her, as she hardly played this year.

Um Rowe was a starter on the worst team in the conference. She didn't play this year cause Brooks brought in talent that finished fourth in the SEC. This decision has zero impact on basketball itself, it's just more of a bad PR situation that was probably avoidable. Brooks has no promises to any of the players he didn't recruit or hand out a scholarship to.

We don't have the full picture so I'm not going to assume anyone is in the right or wrong but no team uses all 15 scholarships so I don't think it is unreasonable to honor her scholarship as long as she doesn't harm the culture he is trying to build (e.g., toxic personality or lazy).

There are also definitely more subtle ways to tell someone to transfer too... you're not going to get any playtime next season, not a good fit for our system, etc.

As it should. He may be a good coach but there are stories about the person he is

Turnover whenever there is a coaching change has always been the way it goes. Some choose to leave because they aren't enamored w/ the new coach, others are encouraged to leave because they won't be finding much if any playing time under the new staff. It's always been that way as far as I can remember.

The portal makes it easier for wholesale immediate turnover of a roster, but the concept is not new.

This is who he is and has always been--not sure why some are surprised.

If his own daughter can be on the team (not making any statistical contribution) as a scholarship player, why can't Cassidy finish out her career?

Idk, chopping a player’s scholarship right before her senior season is a crappy move if she hasn’t done anything wrong. It basically forces her to pay a year out of pocket on her own or pushes back her graduation date if she transfers. It’s not like Kentucky has a shortage of roster spots either, there are 7 open scholarships.

This type of situation isn't unusual as there are many examples of this every year for various reasons which we'll never know. If one doesn't like Coach Brooks for whatever reason, that's fair, but to think there is something nefarious happening in Kentucky seems a little extra to me.

This is the unfortunate reality of today's sports. This happens way more often than people realize but it usually gets swept under the rug.

What I dont get, is that with her off the roster they only have 7 players set for next year. Is he really bringing in 8 quality transfer portal players to justify this move. I doubt it and it makes weird to ask a rising senior to leave a school they dedicated 3 years to.

Respectfully disagree. Students sign their offer letters with the university, not with the coach, and the offer is for four years of tuition and expenses in exchange for being willing to suit up. Rowe kept her end of the deal and Kentucky should do the same. And come on - does Brooks really think he needs to recruit 15 starter-worthy positions such that he can't honor his university's commitment to Rowe one more year?

I think I've just found a new favorite team to root against next season.

Brooks was paid pretty good money to come to Kentucky and turn around a program that was dead in the water. Elzy couldn't bring in any talent and there were only hundreds of fans attending games.

Brooks let her and Saniah Tyler stick around one year, but I'm sure he's looking to add some quality depth and talent into the program this offseason from the portal. It's a tough business these days for both coaches and players, but that's where college athletics are at now.

If that's your logic then coaches would never get fired for poor performance since they have a contract in place. Come on now, Rowe committed 8 years ago to Matthew Mitchell. She's graduating early and getting married soon. She's going to be just fine.

Let’s be clear players are asked to leave all time. Look at what happened to LSU when Kim came in. Almost their entire roster turned over. And while yes, they could’ve decided on their own to leave. It seems pretty obvious that most of them were told there wasn’t a place for them anymore.

Geno sits down with the players after the season and talks about what their goals and aspirations are . you could be sure if the players goals don’t match what he sees, He tells them that this probably is not the place for them going forward.

I’m not as judgmental as others on this thread as we don’t know the full story there could be good reasons that he doesn’t want her around anymore.

Ask Geno

Absolutely!!!!

I agree that this is wrong. She is a senior that has by all accounts done everything she’s been asked to do. I agree with the sentiment that if his daughter can take a spot without any significant contributions then why can’t a senior?

It’s not like every single person on a roster gets meaningful minutes.
