Paige's Wings Page (merged thread)

Reminder - there are no game threads here for any team, including pros.

Clarification- I’m talking about in-game threads that are play by play-types. People get heated and sometimes angry during games, occasionally making unfortunate remarks about players. When the chat room is set up again, feel free to chat all you want about the game as it’s happening. Post game comments are fine here

I’m seeking clarification. This thread is titled “Paige’s Wings Page.” I posted a summary on last night’s game after the game had ended. This was followed by numerous BY’ers adding their comments about last night’s game, all after the fact.

I understand that we are not to do a play by play during the game on the BY. Is it also inappropriate to comment on various aspects of the game and Paige’s performance in that game after the game has ended?

What are you talking about, this is about Paige, and like it or not, Paige plays for Dallas. The question is, are we supposed to forget our former players when they transition to the pros? Regarding the game, Paige seemed to be getting the CC treatment a lot more these days, and it was funny that all these bad calls, and physicality were in front of Caitlin Clark fans. hmmmm.

Citron is certainly Paige’s kryptonite. But Paige didn’t play badly last night. Furthermore, Citron has had her own less-than-stellar games recently. As browns indicated, “Paige has ROY wrapped up.” Paige was asked after the game if her back was an issue and she flatly said that “it was not.”

Could Paige have been more aggressive in the 2nd half? I suppose so. But here’s the rub. The Wings are going nowhere and Koclanes & GM Miller know that. Whether they are tanking in order to secure the first draft pick or simply trying out lots of different lineups to decide which 6 players they will hold onto leading into free agency and next season’s expansion draft, I don’t know.

There are lots of fans calling for the HC’s scalp. I think the jury is still out on Koclanes until he shows what he is capable of doing with a talented veteran lineup around Paige.

But clearly the plan is to build the team around Paige by securing the top lottery pick (right now the Wings have the best odds), hold onto rookie contracts, maybe spend some money to keep Arike and then bring in several top free agents in order to compete next season.

So we can’t watch what the Dallas Wings are doing right now as if they are the UConn Huskies and Geno is the coach. This year’s W/L record doesn’t matter to the Wings.
oldude- - - IMHO it's a mistake to have a young, inexperienced coach coach a young team!
Dallas needs a coach with experience to guide them!
The team and the coach shouldn't be learning on the job!

After taking another look at the thread, I think what HuskyNan was referring to was 2 “in game posts” by one BY’er and not the string of posts that came after the game.

Well, Koclanes isn’t going anywhere this season. Whether Dallas decides to upgrade their HC next season along with their roster remains to be seen. But GM Miller and HC Koclanes are tight.

It's the Miller relationship that got him there. Of course the fundamental problem is Miller. It was ludicrous to put a rookie coach in with pretty much a new squad.

At this point we do not know how the offseason will play out. We have the collective bargaining agreement negotiations that will determine how the total team salary cap will work, how the individual salary caps will work, and the rookie, sophomore, & 3rd yr players' (who remain under contract) salary caps will work. Further, every veteran player is a free agent; that means the player, but also the clubs are 'at will' to sign or not sign anyone of those veterans that they would so choose. It seems to me that it will be a huge game of musical chairs with the exception of the young players!

The 2026 Draft Lottery will be reserved to just four clubs. The odds for which club chooses first, second, third and fourth are derived from a combination of 2024 and 2025 win percentages. In essence, just because a club may be bad this season (thinking Connecticut Sun), doesn't guarantee them anything because last season they may have had a solid record.

If the season were to end right this minute, the following are the odds for the first lottery draft choice:
Dallas Wings: 44.2% Chance of 1st Choice
Chicago Sky: 22.7% Chance of 1st Choice
L.A. Sparks: 22.7% Chance of 1st Choice
Washington Mystics: 11.4% Chance of 1st Choice
Then of course is the question, who has already traded their first round draft choice away? Too much for a simpleton like me to figure out...

There are five teams that will be part of the 2026 WNBA draft lottery since there will be five teams who will not make the playoffs.

MN will probably also get a lottery pick (they get CHI’s pick).

Agreed, on all your points, but I'd like to amplify that the refs were dreadful in their officiating (particularly regarding Paige). Paige was the victim of multiple uncalled fouls that sent her violently to the floor and ironically was called for a foul on a defensive rebound when Lexi Hull went over her back sending Paige to the floor clutching her injured back. Utterly disgusting job refs!
As you noted, Paige was obliterated several times by Boston, and I can't help but wonder how an Indiana fan would react if there were multiple instances where Caitlin was flattened by someone of similar size, strength and aggression as Boston. Unfortunately, no one on Dallas, subsequently set any aggressive screens or picks in response. I was also disappointed that Koclanes didn't object even more strenuously over Paige's mauling - I would have been happy if he protested enough to get tossed from the game trying to defend his star (even if it cost them a win, as the team isn't going anywhere this season).
My conclusion is, unfortunately, that, going forward, Dallas will need one or two enforcers to mete out equivalent aggression on opposing undersized stars in order to protect their "franchise", as the refs are incapable of discouraging dangerous plays by adequately calling a game.
Or someone on the Wings could call out the screens. If I were Paige, I would be more upset with my teammates and my bench than with Aliyah Boston.

Are you suggesting that Koclanes should have pitched a fit with the refs over perfectly legal screens? Or that players should only be allowed to set picks on opponents who are their same size and strength? As for the egregious non-call on Hull, Koclanes called a timeout for the specific purpose of getting in the refs face. Are you saying that he should have done more? Perhaps resorted to obscenities? Is there any evidence that getting tossed from the game leads to better officiating?

There is nothing wrong with a good obscenities laden tirade. Working the refs is part of the game.

You can always comment after the game. During the game, play by plays aren’t allowed

In-game threads aren’t allowed, not during UConn games or pro games. That’s why we have a chat room

I very much agree that Paige should be better protected with shoutouts from her teammates, but feel that there's a point when your star must be protected (as teammates did for Caitlin last year) and that can be accomplished by teammates dishing out the same punishment on their opponent (which has not been happening this year) and by a coach crossing over the line in his reaction to situations (whether legal or not) in order to rally the team to let it be known that they will not accept play which endangers their own. And, yes, i believe that Boston (who I respect for her skill around the basket on offense and love as a human being off the court) frequently crosses the line into the realm of dangerous play, and I would be astonished if Boston were to do the same crap to Caitlin as an opponent of the Fever that she does to Paige, that Caitlin's coaches and teammates would not move heaven and earth to see that such actions would not be accepted as merely the cost of doing business.
And yes, vociferous pushback can influence future officiating.

Funny that Sophie Cunningham came out on her podcast saying she couldn't believe the amount of calls Paige kept getting aganst Fever players..they couldn't get near Paige wthout a foul being called
Paige is constantly whining to officials about fouls not being called when in fact the amount of physicality against her doesn't even come closeb to what CC had to put up with last year

If we distill all these posts down (regarding officiating) we end up at the same place: The officiation stinks and the level of physicality is out of control. It's not a pretty game to watch at all. It's not even fun to watch compared to the UConn standard we're used to. With all the injuries to stars, the league is kind of a mess, but at least viewership is holding up for now, Will it continue if the players are just allowed to play good basketball as opposed to the drama queen stuff and inflammatory social media posts? I guess it appeals to the Gen z kids..

Any team that plays Dallas has one strategy. Stop Bueckers by double teaming her and bumping and holding her. Let other people beat them by allowing the Bergers, Jones and anyone else to shoot.
