From the 1st one I ever saw, I’ve hated these game interviews. Coach/player is concentrating on the game, they don’t want to be distracted (bothered, imposed upon) by a reporter during a break in play. Wait til after the game.

Reporter to Coach- “ What’s wrong with your team -you’re getting killed off the boards.”

Coach: “We’re not rebounding.”

Those that can't play, coach.
Those that can't coach, become announcers.
Those that can't announce, become sideline reporters.

Yeah, those interviews are pretty worthless. However, they exist.

But if you want to promote your brand, get your NIL, be the face of UCONN WBB, .....you're gonna have to do some stuff that sucks.
 
Once again one of the clickbait oriented online media sites (SI) has all of us following another trolling story about UConn, Paige or Geno. At least this one isn’t titled, “Geno throws Paige under the bus.”

I studiously avoid clicking on articles from SI, Sportskeeda, Athlon Sports, Essentially Sports, MSN Sports, Marca and other so-called Sports Media sites that traffic in badly written, thinly sourced articles that are designed with the express purpose to get people to click on them.

My request to the Boneyard is simple. If you want to click on such articles and read them, that’s your business. But please don’t repost such articles on the BY.
 
Sorry to disagree:

Holly has been a consistent positive in the growth of woman's BB
If you have to have sideline reporters...she's as good as it gets

I do agree that little knowledge is gained by the (long-standing) tradition
of flagging one of the leading players at half-time as they're running to the locker room...

A few not so great questions followed by standard, rushed out-of-breath responses does little to edify.

Geno's 1st quarter ending interview (on the other hand) did indeed provide insight when he spoke about his attempt to disrupt using his sub pattern.

I agree with everyone who says that in-game interviews of either players or coaches should not be done. Geno is the only coach who says anything insightful in such interviews, and even he is more interesting in regular postgame interviews.

But I don't agree with the criticism of Holly. If these interviews have to be done, Holly is better than anyone else at doing them.
 
My favorite on the value Holly adds to our understanding and insight into the game: Sabrina Ionescu just shot the lights out in the 3 point contest. Holley asks "How did you do it?" (As if that's an intelligent question) Sabrina answers "I practiced". Holley couldn't believe it. Asks again - "Yes, but how did you do it?" Sabrina answers again "I practiced". So Holley tried one more time. Sabrina says "I practiced"

I guess that they're right on the saying "3rd time's a charm", it seemed to have shut Holly up.
 
I don't know if you saw this but as she headed off the floor she saw she was being waved into an interview and she lifted her eyes to the rafters and threw her right arm up in the air.

Exactly. She was hitting the sides of her head in obvious frustration well before Holly called her name. But let's make this about Holly.

As an aside, what was Geno upset about at the end of the first period? Jamelle did a good job walking him back. I was impressed Geno was able to compose himself for the interview that followed.
 
the ones that irritate most are those conducted while there is real, live action happening, which some nitwit must think is of minor interest to viewers who specifically tuned for the real, live action. and it's infinitely more ridiculous when they split the screen to add the talking head(s). YOWSA!

it is like those despised refs who think they are the main attraction.

How did Sports Illustrated go from a legit publication to garbage bin?
 
I'm sure the mid-game interviews are annoying to some players/coaches but it's part of growing the sport and keeps fans involved. Sometimes they're quite entertaining too--Kim Mulkey in particular has had some hilarious moments in mid-game interviews.

At worst it wastes about 1 minute of the player's experience during an extended break, and I'm sure some players love giving interviews even if others don't.

I give Geno tons of credit. Just prior to that interview he was being restrained by his coaching staff. I'm not sure why he was upset prior to the interview but he shared insightful responses.

Very good question. When I was growing up, along with millions of Americans, I looked forward to Fridays when my weekly SI would arrive in the mail. It featured some of the very best sportswriters in the business, along with unparalleled sports photography.

Over the years, SI lost subscribers and advertising revenue as well as top sportswriters, the same trend that all print media was facing. The magazine shrank. Neither the articles or the photography was as good.

Eventually they were purchased by a UK based internet media company who continues to put out a print version of SI that vaguely resembles the former magazine version. But they have also migrated SI to an online version that publishes a lot of articles that are more “clickbait” than legitimate sports journalism.

It’s a sad fate for what once was the gold standard in sports journalism. :(
