when someone else's name has being published as first team, and they made a mistake, they should just add Paige, not move the other player down.

That's a bit of tunnel vision as well. What exactly has she done that's better than the rest of the players on the first team? I know I wouldn't trade her for any of them, even if that were possible, but her numbers don't really support, do they? A lot of Paige's greatness comes from her leadership and other intangibles. Hard to quantify that for AA voters who haven't watched every game...

As I noted in my earlier post other teams have/need/want their top player to take more of the overall team's shots, as well as to play more minutes because they don't have the bench we have this season. If you carefully compare Paige's stats to the other top players you really get to see how terrifically well-rounded she is as the numbers don't lie. And don't just look at this season's stats - for instance, this year Paige hasn't gotten as many blocks as last year (a stat that JuJu leads her this season), but she achieved that because that's what the team needed then. If Geno's system allowed Paige to take over games as Caitlin Clark did at Iowa (who took 35% of her team's shots last year), there's no doubt in my mind that she could be among the best in most statistical categories. But our fair Paige is a consummate team player, and team wins seems to be the only measure she's interested in (and winning that elusive natty!).

Other stats that to me are very telling when comparing talent: turnovers and assists. The benchmark for a good assist: turnover ratio is 3:1. This season Paige is at 3.7:1 (by the way - #1 in the nation!) while JuJu is at a very middlin' 1.21:1. Paige's ratio has been as follows: '20-21 2.3:1, '21-22 (17 games) 2.3:1, '23-24 2.5:1 (injured/out '22-23). Here's an eye popper: JuJu's freshman year ratio was 0.8:1, that is, 20% less assists than turnovers made! FYI Hannah Hildago's ratio is 1.29:1.

Nothing against JuJu, Hannah or other players on the first team - they're exciting players to watch and have helped continue to build women's college basketball and led their teams this season. IMO Paige is putting up MVP/POY-type numbers across the board, even if her ppg is barely top-20.

I'm with you, Rowdy. I'm good with Paige being second team... there were stretches of the season when it was debatable between Paige and Sarah, who was the better player.

My only preference would have been Morrow on first team instead of Booker.

It depends on what numbers you’re looking at. For arguments sake let’s take Betts out of the equation. She’s a true Big who’s got better numbers when it comes to shooting percentage, rebounds and blocks.

Let’s take a look at Paige along with the other 1st team players (Hidalgo, Watkins & Booker), specifically in relationship to efficiency. Paige leads the country in A/TO ratio at 3.89. The others are nowhere in the top 50.

Paige is 45th in the country on FG% at 53.89%. The others are nowhere in the top 50.

Paige is 22nd in the nation in FT percentage at 89%. Hidalgo is 42nd. Watkins & Booker outside the top 50

Paige is shooting 40.08 from the arc which places her in 47th nationally. Hidalgo is 45th. Watkins & Booker outside the top 50.

Hidalgo is 4th in the nation in steals per game. The other players, including Paige are outside the top 50.

So here’s my point. Watkins & Booker are both high volume shooters who score a lot of points. Hidalgo is a more complete player. But no one in the country does more for her team, on the court, than Paige, and that doesn’t even consider her leadership ability.

If you’re going to select a 5 player AA team, then select a 5 player AA team. But the incompetence of the Athletic is staggering. Either they didn’t count up the votes correctly, or they realized that they screwed up by not selecting Paige as one of their 5 AA’s and decided to flip Paige and Latson after the fact. Sports journalism at its worst.

I agree with everything you pointed out. You can add that Paige is all these things despite being unselfish, and not taking too many shots (much to the chagrin of Geno, and her fans) to pad her stats.

I believe she's not getting all the attention and accolades she deserves because of the conference she plays in.

There's something opposite going on on the men's side with Duke. ACC is pretty weak this year and duke's SoS is 64, and their non-conf SoS is 10 (uconn women's numbers are 44 and 2). Yet people have no problem ranking them 2nd, and anointing Flagg POY.

I really hope our gals gel and go on a run and make all these naysayers wear egg on their faces, like the espn GameDay crew did at halftime of our game against South Carolina.

Latson: FSU SG-very elite scorer. 25 PPG, even against ranked ACC teams.

Booker: One of many elite freshman from last years class. This year, she hasn’t been as great against Top Competition though. Still Texas’s best/Second best depending how you look at it.
 
Everyone likes to talk about numbers and this is where Paige is penalized for playing for UConn. Where others on the list often play close to 40 minutes a game to get their stats Paige usually does not play in the 4th quarter and sometimes not even the full 3rd. Makes it hard to beat the others gaudy numbers. That is why I think Paige is the best!

on their roster would be listed as an ALL American, no?

I think it's less about minutes and more about the fact that UConn recruits are uniformly unselfish team players who are trained to look for the best shot.....if Paige wanted to score 30 points a game I don't think she'd have a problem doing it simply by becoming a volume shooter....

Good call on this. In a bit of a surprise Booker of TX was selected SEC player of the year by the coaches over predicted winner Morrow from LSU.

We'll see if that is a predictor of All-American teams.

In a similar upset, Hailey Van Lith was selected Big12 POY over her TCU teammate Sedonah Prince.
