I find it kind of hilarious that UConn had nearly twice the steals and fast break points, a third fewer turnovers, the same three point shooting percentage, and two more total shot attempts. Basically they beat the Volunteers at everything that's supposed to be their bread and butter, and simply failed to take a few more three pointers...

It was just bizarre game on many levels.

Almost as bizarre as the fact that in the span of a mere 10 days we went from losing to a mediocre team in Knoxville to demolishing the defending national champions and ending their long home win streak (and then backing it up the rest of the season just to show it wasn't a fluke).

I'll never be happy we lost that game, but if that's the tradeoff for what came after, I'll take that deal every day of the week and twice on Sunday :)

Tennessee had more turnovers 19 to 13.
Tennessee more rebounds 46 to 34.
Rebounds is what won the game.

A facile but oversimplified analysis. Most of the rebound margin was on the defensive glass due to differentials in shots taken and FG%. The offensive board differential was only +4.

In any event, credit where it's due -- congrats to the Vols on peaking in early February.
 
Did we see whats his name at Kentucky run with a '40 minutes of hell' system for a couple of years, with the same sub pattern of 5 in 5 out. They certainly won some games with it, but it never carried them to the FF. It can be fun, but it generally is a way to hide lack of top tier talent - create enough chaos and no one plays well.

Syracuse ran with a pressure and bombs away offense that actually got them to a championship game - basically only shot two pointers on rebounds, and tried to get a three pointer up in under 15 seconds every possession.

And of course Louisville played the 'they can't call every foul' defense one year, while riding the Shimmel sisters to a championship game.

All sorts of ways to 'skin the cat', but most of it is a compensation for a talent gap.
 
BTW Tennessee is #8 in polls. Too early preseason poll.
 
A nice freshman class, adding to a good group of returning players. Cooper, Whitehorn, Boyd, Spearman, Latham, and Wynn. I am looking forward to the season.

I think what this amounts to is a few extra 100+ point blowouts in the OOC and aiming for 85 ppg once conference play starts. I think Kim will be able to accomplish that with the talent she has.

I think Caldwell learned a lot from the past season. She will make some adjustments. I think this freshman class . Will make a difference. I wouldn't be surprised if 97 points was the normal average.

Well the 87 average this past season was about 10 points higher. The the average of the previous season. That is just in the first year in this style of play .

Giving credit where due, she may emulate Holly Warlick and make an EE appearance at some point, or exceed the ennui Kellie Harper produced. Now that Vanderbilt is familiar with “this style of play”, I wouldn't be surprised if they beat the LVs more than twice in one season, :D

I think Caldwell will do better than Warlick and Harper did. I will say Final Four soon.
 
Perhaps Caldwell should be more concerned with how to break 60 points in a Sweet 16 game.

The only way Tennessee is going to average 97 points is to continue running up the score against the likes of Samford, W Carolina, Winthrop and NC Central.

I think the team for this upcoming season. It will be a more athletic team . Fit this style of play better.
