Over/Under for WNBA Players Opting Not to Play in 2020?

Rebecca Allen is the supposedly last opt-out. She would be the 7th. I don’t think she wanted to take on the long flight from Australia.

Don’t be surprised if there’s a few more past today’s deadline that can’t make their international flights.

I thought it was going to be way more opt-outs. Maybe the others who are considering it, are hoping they get some type of extension to make their decisions.

I think there will be some more big opt out names becoming public prior to the players' projected arrival date in Florda of July 6.

Several of the teams will be/are scrambling to fill their rosters.

With the addition today of Essence Carson, Washington is now at 10 confirmed players for 2020 and must add at least one player. Los Angeles is in the same situation. Teams really should plan to take 12 players to Bradenton, given the likelihood that one or more players per team will likely become infected during the 2020 season.

There are three point or combo guards sitting out; this may be the last chance Saniya Chong has to break into the W. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Sydney Colson tested positive for coronavirus. If she’s the only player in the league who tests positive, that’s pretty good.

Tough break

Sky guard Sydney Colson is the most recent player to speak publicly about testing positive for the coronavirus. On her Twitter account, the veteran made clear she has taken quarantine seriously but still contracted the virus.

Bummer about Colson. She’s a really good player who’s just never found the right fit.

I hope she makes a full recovery soon. I’ve read recently that many of the young people who develop mild cases actually show significant lung damage in x-rays.

I dunno if it’s been posted elsewhere, but the Orlando Pride dropped out of the NWSL for the season because of 10 positive CoViD tests.

Is that the team that partied at a night club

Yup. On a related matter, saw the NWSL opener NC vs Portland. Decent game. One may argue the fan situation is the same as before the Pandemic. :(

Colson won't be the only player to test positive for COVID-19 going forward. It is only a matter of days before additional positive tests for players will be confirmed publicly by their respective teams. It is inevitable given that the players have begun training with their teams at team facilities across the country in a variety of locations that are experiencing virus outbreaks.

I need some help here! Why was the internet on a tirade for someone to pick up Tea Cooper specifically Twitter? Now that they have it’s like the biggest signing ever! What am i missing? It’s an honest question? IMO Joyner Holmes was the biggest rookie pick up. She just needs good coaching which I’m not sure she got at Texas.

Holmes needs a lot more than just good coaching IMO. Her game hasnt improved since she was a freshman.

Cooper has a big following I believe. Also she was really good for Baylor this year. Percentages and efficiency were way higher than when she was at Tennessee or SC. Good scoring PG off the bench who could be a decent pro player IMO if she goes to the right situation.

Sue Bird appeared on Mina Kimes ESPN Daily Podcast and explained some of risk analysis and why the WNBA players are best suited to handle the "bubble"

1) WNBA players play international ball and that prepares them very well for self isolating minimal contact conditions. Basically, the bubble is probably better than Russia ;)

2) The actual safety in the bubble where efforts to make sure that all surroundings are as virus free as possible may be better than the normal environment any citizen may find themselves interacting with the outside world.

Better update the power rankings...

Yeah, move the Aces up. ;)

More detailed story

Has anyone been keeping a running total of the number of players that have opted out so far? If so, what’s the number? The over/under was 6. I predicted waaayyyy over. I’m interested to learn where my prediction stands.

The opt out number is currently at 10. I predicted that it was going to be at least 20 and it looks that it might be well short of that number.

Tiffany Hayes, Atlanta Dream
Renee Montgomery, Atlanta Dream
Jonquel Jones, Connecticut Sun
Liz Cambage, Las Vegas Aces
Chiney Ogwumike, Los Angeles Sparks
Kristi Toliver, Los Angeles Sparks
Cecilia Zandalasini, Minnesota Lynx
Rebecca Allen, New York Liberty
LaToya Sanders, Washington Mystics
Natasha Cloud, Washington Mystics

Thanks sivad40. There are some marquee names here. You could field a very competitive team with those listed.

Not a player but Sky assistant coach Bridget Pettis resigning. Not satisfied with the procedures (+ wanting to spend more time at the grass roots level of her community)

The tally of WNBA opt outs on active rosters stood at 7 at the initial declaration deadline of June 25. Three players opted out after the deadline to raise the growing total to 10.

WNBA players are scheduled to arrive in Bradenton, Florida today. One can expect to hear of others opting out of the WNBA bubble during the next few days. The experiment begins....
