Yup. She resents dealing with healthcare online and being forced to use a computer at all. For her it is a tool to be used as a glorified typewriter nothing more. Only in the last year has she found any personal reason to use the internet. learning any aspect of computing is frustrating to the point anger. she despises software upgrades. It is using the computer which she hates. Needless to say we have different world views on this.
Ice, my husband and your wife are two of a kind, though he does have and use a debit card. But he despises using the computer and is forced to at work. To say he is computer illiterate is a gross understatement. Which is frustrating for him since he has moved into a position where he has to use one to do 75% of his job.

I cannot express my wife's resentment of the situation strongly enough.

It, also, puts an incredible burden on people like my mother who although very computer literate having taught it in school can longer use a computer because she has macular degeneration and cannot see the screen. She confessed to me the other day that she has not used her computer in over a month.

Here in rural PA less than 20% of my 70+ year old parishioners even have a computer. There is a great deal of ageism in these trends.

I pay credit cards, phone, lights etc by phone, anything else by check, groceries, gas by debit card. Don't trust giving card # online as I've been hacked twice. Nothing is foolproof as someone always figures out a way.

paying a bill either way can cause problems... crooks need just a little personal information and your numbers. I hate "credit cards"... I rather use my own hard-earned money (debit card) on anything I purchase.

With a debit card,
If the merchant screws up (or the card is stolen), your money is gone and you've gotta deal with the bank to get it back.

With a credit card,
If the merchant screws up (or the card is stolen), it ends up on your statement and you get the credit card company to deal with it.

My wife too is a luddite. Doesn't even own a credit card. She's so retro that when she writes out checks, she uses roman numerals.:) No credit card becomes a problem when she wants to rent a car. She then has to use my card... Doh! Not so dumb after all.

A few other comments. TDiNozzo, I just noticed my CT auto registration renewal included an option to renew online using a credit card. Worked great. Perhaps they will expand to boat renewals too.

I think credit cards are the way to go if you pay the balance automatically each month. If you don't, cards are a disaster for your finances.

Did you know the Treasury is considering eliminating the $1 bill and replacing it with a $1 coin? The paper doesn't last long enough and it is expensive to keep replacing the bills.

I once had my Visa card stolen (I probably accidentally left it at a restaurant without realizing). The next day I got a call from Visa asking if I had purchased furniture in New Jersey. When I said no, they invalidated my card, sent me a new one, and wiped out all of the fraudulent charges. I was impressed at how quickly they picked up on the fraud and how customer focused they were in fixing the problem without the slightest hassle.

My only argument against credit cards is that they raise the price of goods by charging the merchant when customers use them. When they give rebates to cardholders, that are borne by the merchant, it's a form of extortion.

I also think credit cards are the safest way to dole out your money. Not much risk of loss. Cash can get stolen, checks have lots of personal info on them past the routing and account numbers. Often merchants write drivers license #, phone #, addresses, etc on the checks.

Will never happen. Dollar coins have failed over and over in this country.

What they need to do is get rid of the penny. Completely useless these days, and expensive to produce as commodity prices have risen. Because of inflation, a penny today would've been about one-tenth of a cent in 1950.

But if they withdraw the dollar bill, what choice would we have other than a bunch of quarters in change.

But if they withdraw the dollar bill

Will never happen.

Unless the members of Congress enjoy getting pelted with one dollar coins, because that's what will happen the minute they set foot back in their districts.

If there are some that hate giving out any info to buy or pay something online or over the phone, Discover Card has a one time use option, you generate another card # that's linked to your original card, but only Discover card knows the real card number.... you give out the generated card number for a one time use.... I use it all the time...So no one gets my bank account numbers or credit card numbers.

When I was a kid there were still a few things you could buy with a
penny (jawbreaker gum ball . . . shallow palmful of stale spanish peanuts . . .
12 minutes on a parking meter . . . ) but those days are long gone. Now, I
doubt that there is anything that you could buy with a dime.

If it were up to me (and of course it isn't), I would get rid of the penny, the
nickel, and the one and two dollar bills, and in their stead I would mint a
dollar and a two dollar coin. But that is too sensible to ever happen.

That is exactly what has to happen. That is what it took in Canada where they have both $1 and $2 coins.

If that happens I'm running for congress and spending lots of time in my district!

It will make fundraising easier, more painful, but easier.

Just use paper napkins and put the information on them. The bank will balk but it is legal. It is still legal for prescriptions, too.

We used to have a doctor here who would write prescriptions on a napkin in the local truck stop and then send folks off to the pharmacy. He was legendary. His joy was in calling up pharmacies and chewing them out when that refused to fulfill them. Actually, I think the check writing thing went out of date in the last round of federal laws defining checks, etc.

I doubt any were trying to do that. Most were simply ignorant of the law. None the less it is completely legal under the law. If it is a problem make it illegal.

As I said Butch or Doc G. was legendary. It is a small community and while most of us know each other, everyone knew Butch. Usually the person questioning one of Butch's impromptu prescriptions was a new pharmacist who was the victim of Butch having fun.

I did his funeral with about 400-500 people present after he died of a heart attack in Alaska having just landed a 200 pound Halibut.
