My wife steadfastly refuses to have a debit card. She despises corporations including her retirement forcing people online to conduct business. Ain't no service in the service industries.

As someone who works for a company whose focus is electronic payments (online banking, mobile banking, merchant retail, etc.), I find that offensive! :)

She does realize that, by writing checks, she's walking around and handing people pieces of paper with her name, address, FI's routing number, and her DDA number, right?

Yup. She resents dealing with healthcare online and being forced to use a computer at all. For her it is a tool to be used as a glorified typewriter nothing more. Only in the last year has she found any personal reason to use the internet. learning any aspect of computing is frustrating to the point anger. she despises software upgrades. It is using the computer which she hates. Needless to say we have different world views on this.

"And my pet peeve is people who wrote checks at the grocery store."

Amen. And they seldom have a pen. :(

I know many elderly non computer savvy who still write checks. I think that you should cut those folks some slack...

And I also write the odd check for vocal coaches, dog walkers, and the odd fee here and there when needed...and I manage to do so with an open mind and very little nose holding.

I try to do most things on-line. However there are a few I still have to pay with checks. :( Oh well, an order will last me a few years.

I remember the old days of being able to work the float to write yourself a loan with a check that wasn't funded yet. In my late teens and early 20s, my friends and I kept track of which grocery stores cleared their checks the slowest. These became our check-cashers of choice. My liver would probably be much pinker if I wasn't able to finance weekend binges with the following Thursday's paycheck.

Oh, and I agree about those darn grocery store check writers! Ugh!

Indeed, Check 21 eliminated the float around check clearing, and now there are automated check authorization systems that can allow retailers to reject a check at the point of sale.

So now more than ever, your mouth ought not to write checks your ass can't cash...

I still have to write checks for the CT DMV... they're so behind the times, you still have to mail in your boating registrations.
I also write checks for my town taxes, ever since the tax collector was taking some off the top, and sending out fake past due bills for previous years to fill in the missing money, until she got caught..:) .. Glad my bank use to sent the old checks back to me... (Now I print copies right after I pay the taxes).

So I guess you don't have to fight her for the iPad either......:)

My wife does not use a cell phone except the one I insist she carry for 911 emergencies. She does not use a Kindle or an iPad. I have already described her relationship with the computer. She is a Luddite of the first order.

I like it! If she were a golfer, she would scoff at my 'Persimmon Open' idea and start her own tourney, wherein only hickory shafts and gutta percha balls could be used.

Or perhaps featheries.

Know what's even worse than a check writer at the checkout register? *$%#ing COUPONERS! Willing to hold up the whole line for a 20 cent coupon. A few days ago I was behind an idiot that emptied half her cart at the checkout looking for a couponed product she swore she had purchased. Of course she hadn't.

Instead of a speed line, markets need to open a separate line for check writers, couponers and women with 10 gallon purses that insist they have those 3 pennies somewhere in there.

The only birdies she is interested in on the golf course are those nesting in trees.

I have never used a debit card; I use the credit card as much as I can.
Still need to use checks for a few bills that I get.

I'm a check writer for many bills, a couple because I was just too lazy to set up the on-line option. I am not writing my credit card information on a slip of paper and sending it in to my favorite charities either, it is bad enough I have to use that info on-line to buy things. I "do" check accounts regularly. All in all I write between 10 and 20 checks a month.

I use credit cards for everything I don't write a check for (except the credit card bills themselves, which I pay in full every month on-line). Gladly take the benefit they offer, in my particular case, priority club points in the Holiday Inn system.

While I don't oppose debit cards, I just don't see a need to use mine, except to withdrawl cash at the ATM. Now THAT is what has really changed - how little we use cash anymore.
