No name yet ...

* Strictly a breaking news thread*, please don't get into whether or not you like the Church/the pope/etc.

My Pope app has been active in the last 5 minutes and it's...

Ray Lewis.

Sheesh, who'd have thunk the boneyard would be my source for this info?

Good grief :-o

And the new Pope is : Muffet McGraw". What a week she's having! ;)

Hey we may as well have some fun with it. We can't change the outcome.

Dang. Beat me to it.

From the NY Times:
Cardinal Bergoglio took the name FRANCIS I

Yes, Francis I. Some suggesting it is a nod of the head to major changes in the church. A third world pope with a bunch of political experience. Formerly Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aries. 76 Years old.

Wow - a very big deal indeed for the Latin American world. Huge!

Godspeed to him, he has a lot of managerial cleanup to do. I hope those demands don't take him away from being the inspirational leader that so many need him to be. JP II is still sorely missed in that regard.

He has managed one of the largest and most difficult archdiocese in the church so he has structural experience. His tone does sound like the simplicity so embodied in the ministry of John XXIII. He has kept his distance from the liberation theology that has been extensively celebrated by areas of the Latin American church.

Is the pope in any way significant outside of Catholicism?

Yes, the nature of the pope broadly impacts relationships across the church. The participation of the Roman Catholic church in ecumenical dialogs not only open discussions between the Roman church and specific protestant traditions but the tone led protestant denominations into dialog with each other.

Well, JP II did quite a bit behind the scenes in the fight against communism from what I understand. Not sure the Iron Curtain would have fallen when it did without him. And perhaps it might not have been as bloodless.

But this is only from things I've read in the news, and I don't really recall many of the details.

Unfortunately, religion plays a strong role in influencing politics. The Pope has an impact on the world as long as they take the church's stance on political and social issues.
