This club pro shot 89 followed by 103 at a web.com event this past weekend. I was curious to hear what all the golf enthusiasts on the BY think about this commentary by ESPN golf analyst Michael Collins?........pretty funny interview actually and I agree with most everything he says........and I know I could have beaten this dude too!! LOL.........;)

Mau, the guy who used to plow for me moved to Florida about 1 1/2 years ago to take a course maintenance job. He played softball with my son and was a decent athlete (not a requirement to be a good golfer IMO). He had only played golf a few times before moving. He is now an assistant pro. He told my son all you have to do is be able to break 80 and take the required courses so a lot of these guys aren't great players. But 103? Cmon.
Lets face it, all a lot of these guys do is punch a cash register and load your cart. Some are good teachers and some just tell you to get the club square at impact and say "$65, please."
I've taken some lessons over the last 50+ years and the 2 best were Lou Gelby at the Grantmore driving range(deceased and Tommy Armour's former assistant) and Don Ghlia in Manchester. The one thing Ive learned is that baseball is horrible for the golf swing and hockey players are naturals. But the main thing I've learned is just when you think you have the swing figured out you are due for your worst round of the season.

Best guy I know of in CT is Ken Doyle at Hopmeadow CC in Simsbury.

Also it's best to find a guy and stick with it. About 6 years ago I got lessons from 4 different guys (overseas), who all wanted to tweak my swing more than just a little. I ended up losing any type of swing entirely. Went from a 10-12 handicap to a complete duffer. Haven't picked up a club in 6 years.

I play Disc Golf now and completely love it. And it's free! (outside the discs themselves)

I agree with part of it, but I know you can shoot 103 quickly.

He seems the type of pro that will readily play with a scratch golfer like me.

And not complain as I scratch my head at a missed putt, scratch my ass when I yell "fore", and scratch my balls after pissing in the woods.

PGA pros have to successfully complete a Playing Ability Test...essentially a 1-day, 36-hole tournament where you have to come within 15 strokes of the course rating. I am pretty sure there are rules that set the maximum number of times you can attempt to pass the test, then you are shut out.

There are rumors of local pros who have had stand-ins pass the PAT for them.

You play disc golf? Wow. I would never have seen that one coming.

Yeah man. When I go with friends, its always a great time. When I show up solo, it's redneck city. I've met some real interesting characters. Funny, some rednecks have bags of 30 odd discs (I have 9). Great game.

I guess that explains why pitchers are generally much better golfers than position players. And why I suck at it.

As a pretty successful tennis player that had a lot of power, I found that comment interesting. I have found golf very frustrating because I cannot get a full backswing so I tend to hit the ball short and I suck off the tee. I have always blamed it on years of hitting a two handed backhand in tennis. I swear, I cannot take a full swing no matter what I do. My body just wont do it. Very frustrating hitting the ball 200 yards if lucky, especially considering I am a pretty big/young guy.

You don't necessarily need to take a full swing. The most important thing is the hips. Tennis leads your hips out in front quite often, similar to baseball. Golf requires that you keep your hips more square to the ball on impact and follow through with them. I'm willing to bet your problem comes from turning your hips too soon, thereby decreasing your power significantly. I'd get a lesson for some tips to work on this.

Wrist position is another area were tennis players have trouble. They keep them too straight or release too early in the downswing, robbing power. Had a friend who did that and hit 4 clubs lower than me until he fixed it.

Thanks for the tips. I am going to print the two comments you and Subba made and take them to a lesson. I would enjoy golf so much more if I hit the ball further off the tee and with long irons. My short game is pretty good and my touch with high irons is excellent. Ironically, I always attributed that to tennis too and I stand by it.

No problem. Also note how baseball pitchers are by far and away the best golfers in the sport. Their action requires their hips to follow through, similar to a golf swing, where, as mentioned, hitting a ball is best when turning the hips through early.

Hockey players are also very good at golf, as the slap shot is a similar motion, and their hips are so strong from skating.
