Is it primarily used as a mix, or can it be consumed as is?

My father in law drinks sweet vermouth on the rocks before dinner and it's actually not so bad (I guess I just like drinks before dinner).

If you like bitter cocktails, try a Negroni : 1oz gin, 1oz campari, 1oz sweet vermouth.

Manhattans also use sweet vermouth (with whiskey and bitters)- pretty tasty.

Dry vermouth is used in a Martini with gin. Some people like just a drop and some a little more. It's not so good on its own. You can use it in cooking as well and it keeps for a looooong time.

But, I don't know what it is.

It's basically wine that's been spiced with crap and then fortified with more booze.

I've never had a martini or a Manhattan, but I did have it in something called an obituary once. It was vermouth and absinthe mixed with gin. I can't recommend it unless you're trying to kill yourself.

I'm pretty sure most vermouth fans drink it out of a paper bag under a bridge, but wait a while and someone will decide that it's trendy. (I guess when everyone's done with bourbon.)

My Italian rels use it as an aperitif. I use it in Manhats. I attribute the wins at MSG solely to mahats I had during those games.
