As guessed/discussed in the earlier thread, Tom Watson will be the next Ryder Cup coach. Great choice!

I think it's a good pick, too. Not only because of Watson's record and personna, but he's much admired in Scotland.

I guess Larry Nelson was hoping to be picked, and, on his playing record, he is qualified. But, just because you've been a very good player, doesn't mean you'd make a very good captain. Some folks have the personality to lead a group of highly competative egomaniacs (not meant in a bad way), and some don't. Plus, I guess Watson's been more involved with the "younger tour" than Nelson.

Tom Watson has guts, and he keeps it simple. He's a winner and I am very confident he will do a terrific job.

He also happens to be one of the top 5 ball strikers of all time, IMHO - witness his utterly pure long irons dead into the wind (on many holes) at the 2009 Open, shots which did not waver from their intended line. Hogan-esque.
