OT: UConn talks to Pac-12 for FB only membership

How Pac-12 could still lure AAC schools to rebuilt conference | Mailbag

"Let's say there's a school that would send shockwaves across college sports by deciding to join the Pac-12. Assuming this school is a powerhouse in at least one major sport, what would be the benefit to join? - @CelestialMosh

You are undoubtedly referring to Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle's comment to John Canzano's Bald Faced Truth radio show that the Pac-12 was "24 hours" from landing a school that would send "shockwaves" through the industry.

Tinkle didn't name names, but we assume he meant Connecticut."

You missed the most important line in the article:

”We have no doubt the Pac-12 was in communication with UConn — in fact, sources confirmed as much — but were the Huskies on the brink of joining? Consider us skeptical.”

I didn't miss it, I'm just full of hopium

In the realignment world October 2024 might as well be 1076. Things just change so dramatically over night it seems.

I had figured Stanford or Cali said this Acc idea isn’t working let’s go back and try to make the Pac12 something

Has the PAC’s media deal been finalized yet? That I would expect, will potentially drive others interest. If it is $10-15 million each, there will be a different level of interest than if it is $2 million. I don’t know that it will be any of those. Just examples. But I would expect a couple of MW teams will look again as will Memphis and maybe us, I read somewhere $10 million each for football plus additional for basketball bringing g the whole deal into the $14 million range. But I have no idea that’s accurate.

"Playing these schools on the Atlantic Coast is really expensive. What if we formed a conference of teams on the Pacific Coast?"
It will take more than a year to reach that point but. I could see it being reached at some point. There are a few problems though. One is money. Buy outs and all that. The other is prestige. Stanford and Cal would much prefer to be associated with UNC, Duke and Virginia. Not exactly their peers since in their views those are Harvard, Yale and Princeton, but certainly better than San Diego State! It was one thing to be dealing with Washington State as Washington’s pesky little brother, but as an equal? EE gawds!

I mean how is Villanova that high? As a private school, how did they acquire their numbers for that graphic?
As always, the devil is in the details. I'd have to look at the methodology that they used.

I don't know where the legacy schools end up financially, but they are using whatever war chest they had to split the Mountain West and then get snubbed by AAC programs, for now. CR at its worst.

These figures seem made up to anyone else?
I checked a few and they seem in line with the USA Today report, which does not include privates.

Well, no one wants to see privates in USA today.

They are two years old. Maybe made up data from two tears ago.

The numbers jive with the CNBC article a while back.

Saw multiple sources had SDSU at 67MM for FY2022 made a leap the following year.

All timing/FY reported:

“OSU had a surplus of $7.43 million for fiscal year 2024, the school’s final year in the Pac-12 that ended June 30, 2024. The school reported total revenues of $120,312,417, and expenses of $112,883,911.”

You add say another 35 million by virtue of joining a power conference and our numbers look a whole lot more respectable. And that's before all the additional contributions, attendance, merch sales happen.

Isnt Memphis considering exactly the same thing now? PAC for football only and BE for Olympic sports? They’d have a leg up on us for a BIG12 invite if they can succeed in PAC football and BE bball for a couple years…might end up kicking ourselves for not joining the PAC for football only before it was too late.

UConn should oppose adding Memphis unless they get the option, and want to, join them in the PAC for football only. If a B12 isn’t imminent, maybe they should if exit fees for a P4 are low enough.
