I'm surprised at the location, but not the contract.

Thomas Boswell, one of the best baseball writers, says his career compares with the best who have ever played, other than Ruth.

good for the Angels. $25 mil per year is not outrageous when you consider some of the other top salaries in baseball. of course it remains to be seen how his production is over the last 5 years of his contract as he approaches 40...

1. 3B Alex Rodriguez, Yankees $32,000,000
2. OF Vernon Wells, Angels $26,642,857
3. SP/LH CC Sabathia, Yankees $24,285,714
4. 1B Mark Teixeira, Yankees $23,125,000
5. C Joe Mauer, Twins $23,000,000
6. SP/LH Johan Santana, Mets $21,644,708
7. 1B Todd Helton, Rockies $20,275,000
8. 1B Miguel Cabrera, Tigers $20,000,000
(tie) SP/RH Roy Halladay, Phillies $20,000,000
(tie) 1B Ryan Howard, Phillies $20,000,000

As a side note, the highest paid Red Sox player is Beckett at $17 mil, and then Lackey at just over $15 mil. i bet the Sox wish they could go back and get a re-do on Lackey!

$25M is outrageous when you consider he will be almost 42 when the contract expires. Then factor in that he has started to have some injury issues and just had the worst year of his career.

I would bet heavily that the Angels will regret having this albatross of a contract around their necks within six years. The Yanks are already regretting their deal that has a fading A-Rod on their books at $30M+ a year until he is 42 years old. A-Rod is already breaking down and, like Pujols, just had his worst season since he was 19-years old. His second worst season, btw, was in 2010.

The contract will undoubtedly cost the Angels more than it is worth as it's drawing to a close. I doubt the Angels' front office expects they'll be getting $25,000,000 production from Pujols in 2021.

The question is how much they can get from Pujols on the front end of the contract, both in terms of ticket sales and team goals. What is the value to a franchise of a World Series victory (in terms of merchandising, ticket sales, ticket pricing, etc.)? Is that worth $250,000,000 minus the contract cost of whoever else they would have had play first base in Pujols's stead? If so, it's not a bad contract.

I agree 100%. A 10 year contract for a player his age is idiotic. You would think that teams would figure that out by now after seeing how it has worked out for the Yankees with ARod, which was a good deal originally but the extension was very stupid.

And, BTW, it's not as simple a calculation as I just stated above. What is the present value of $25,000,000 10 years from now? It's not $25,000,000; it's $25,000,000 minus some discount rate. Meanwhile, the value in short term has a much higher present value. And since a lot of these contracts are back loaded and often include payments beyond the life of the contract term, the costs are not as unreasonable as they seem at first glance. But you better win with Pujols and sell seats with Pujols.

Present value of money not excepted, I continue to marvel at sports (especially baseball) economics. In a sport which has an ageing fanbase - with advertisers LESS interested in said demographic - I don't know how owners can contiue to assume such contracts. Who steps-up after Budweiser curtails (futher) their marketing $$?
As far a competitive bidding is concerned (and not arguing on the merits of Albert P at all) this has all the elements of a "bubble" about to implode.

250 million for 10 years.....with the Angels.

Being a Cards fan....that sucks.

On the other hand, glad they didn't pay him that.

Methinks reports of ARod's demise are greatly exaggerated. Let's wait until the end of 2012 to write the obit.

As for Pujols, add in the unknown age factor--many believe he is a bit longer in the tooth than 31/32--and new HGH testing this coming season and who knows.
