This is an old Gypsy song also called "Dogs and Ferrets." Steeleye Span did a version called that, but I like June Tabor's version (IIRC with accompaniment by Martin Carthy) much more:

He had such a sweet voice. My favorite of his , though not animal related, was Shivaree. Most people know it as UmUm,Um,Um. He was from Chicago, if I remember correctly. Good memories,my friend.

Yeah, Chi-town boy. This was my fave by him although "Shivaree" was tasty. A sweet high and highly under appreciated tenor. Both this and "Shivaree" were written by Curtis Mayfield who wrote a lot of my faves. Nice to see another appreciator.
