OT: The Song Game

Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water
Jay McShann - Smoke Gets in your Eyes

Jerome Kern's widow tried to stop the Platters from recording this song, because she didn't want a black vocal group to "destroy it." Wonder what she thought of a straight jazz and blues singer doing a version of it?
But she may have been dead by then.

Jackie Wilson ... ( your love keeps lifting me) higher and higher
A couple decades or so back, I was driving through North Carolina and listening to an oldies station on the radio. Some unintelligibly southern lady called in a request in her sickly sweet southern belle voice, and asked to hear "R&R". DJ said sure, he'd get it cued up while on commercial break, and play it "when we come back". Sat through the commercial to find out what the hell song she wanted to hear. Yep, it was Higher and Higher.
Jackie Wilson and Laverne Baker - Think Twice

I normally wouldn't use the same artist to match a word, but I couldn't resist playing this one.

When I saw "think twice" this popped into my head

Randy Travis - Don't Think Twice, It's All Right.

Johnny Otis - Willie and the Hand Jive
Otis Redding - Your Precious Love

A more than credible cover of the original by Jerry Butler & the Impressions.

Hall and Oates - Private Eyes

Hall and Oates - Private Eyes

Little Willie John - Fever
Yes, this is the original version, predating Peggy Lee by a couple years.

I gotta go with the Elvis version. Elvis Presley - Fever
