As I'm sure many have seen, the newly appointed Pope Leo XIV is a graduate of Villanova. It didn't take people long to generate memes linking him to the school's basketball bona fides. In the way that many of us UConn fans find ourselves rooting for our fellow Big East schools during the NCAA tournament, I share a couple here in honor of the new Big East pope.

I love the irony that those jerks in the all cretins crew with BCU and Notre Dame can all marvel that the Big East has the first American and right now most number of Popes. I wonder if his name of Leo is an homage of sorts to the Wildcats of his alma mater...yeah, probably not, but yet again the Big East is better than the acc.

Why is there always someone who can turn a wonderful story about the first US born Pope into an ignorant rant about BC, ND and the ACC. Please take this nonsense elsewhere.

They’re rivals. You post on the men’s board so you should know that

I seldom post on the men’s board. But I am a Catholic and as such I find the remarks directed at two outstanding Catholic institutions to be highly offensive. I am also surprised that you, who have often championed civility on the BY, has no problem with the comments, which have absolutely nothing to do with basketball.

Mate, I am a Roman Catholic too, attended RC school, and I am also an avid sports nut. If you say my comments have absolutely nothing to do with basketball, then what, pray tell, does news of a newly elected Pope have to do with a female basketball forum that is associated with a public institution? You don't like my comments, that's your respectful prerogative, you can use the dislike emoji and feel free to block me. I do take pride, as both a RC and Big East fan, that we have a North American pontiff, and that it's a distinction that those other rival schools in a rival conference don't get to have any claim to.

You miss the entire point. All Americans and particularly American Catholics should take pride in Pope Leo XIV. On this point there is no rivalry. Casting the decision to elect a new Pope, who happens to have ties to Villanova, as a rivalry between schools or conferences is derogatory and petty.

If you haven’t done so, take some time to read the translation of Pope Leo’s remarks yesterday and give some serious consideration to how he might feel about someone using his elevation to become the head of the Catholic Church in a divisive fashion.

Don't go that far.

As for taking shots at ND and BC, I'm all for it.

Shelly Pennyfather must be dancing with the Queen of Angels!
Nice, somewhat obscure reference! I great respect for Pennyfather (now Sister Marie Rose) and her decision to follow her faith.

Read his post again. @KryHavok was talking about BC’s and ND’s fans, not their ordained instructors and administrators. He said nothing offensive about the pope who sounds like a pretty down to earth everyman, like Pope Francis. I doubt he’d be offended by some rivalry trash talk

Where was this lecturing and condemning when women’s board fans were sneering at ND, Providence, Georgetown, St John’s, Xavier and other Catholic schools?

OD, I too am a Catholic. Usher every Sunday at the 9:30 mass. I never take offense at anything said negative about ND. I really don't like them. However, I do like your posts (usually). I'm sure I'll be standing in the vestibule giving out carnations to all the moms this Sunday.

If the pope gets a "home game" it will be one heck of an event.

Nan,
You really do miss the point. I know he was talking about their fans and not the Pope. How would all the UConn fans respond if a ND fan referred to us as “jerks & cretins.” We have a number of ND fans on the BY, and I enjoy their input.

The entire sequence makes no sense. First there is a good natured discussion about the Pope’s connection to Villanova, and then someone decides to make derogatory remarks about ND, BC & the ACC based on absolutely nothing.

You and the other administrators of this site have shut down similar disparaging remarks directed at TN, SC and other schools and their fans. I have absolutely no idea why you are supporting this nonsense.

One final point, we all know that Paige is deeply religious with a strong sense of social justice. There have been a very few occasions when individuals posted comments critical of her on that basis. The response by the BY was like Piranhas on a roast, to borrow Coach Schaefer’s remark.

Why would we ever tolerate someone mocking the faith of someone else, just because they are not UConn fans. Finally, just to be clear, UConn is the only purely secular university in the Big East. If anyone doesn’t have the right to criticize ND & BC based on their religion, It’s UConn fans.

OD, I was a little surprised that UConn was admitted to the BE as the only secular school. As far as ND is concern, it's not religion. Manly it's about them (their fans) being over the top (although calm compared to Volnation).

On a different note, I was pulling for Cardinal Pizzabella. How could someone with a name like Pizzabella not be named Pope? I hope he trademarked his name. It would make for a great name for a pizza joint down in New Haven. :)

UConn has never been the only secular school in the BE.

BE 1.0 included Syracuse at inception
BE 2.0 included Butler when UConn rejoined
