OT - Tad Matta out of tOSU

Thad Matta was known as a tireless worker, a tireless game-planner, and a tireless recruiter. He brought OSU the most basketball success it has enjoyed since the early 1960's. With that being said, when it goes bad, it goes bad. Transfers, lack of recruiting success, and a lack of W's brought on the events of this week. I am not saying that his health wasn't a contributing factor here, but I am saying that he is still the coach today if they had 25 wins last year rather than 17 wins.

He looks like that because of spending the last 10 years on pain pills due to his botched back surgery which caused his drop foot. He has serious medical issues. There have been days he can barely get out of bed or walk.
It's sad, the guy can barely walk and is in constant pain.

Sure he looks old for his age, but he's 49, not 29. If you could not have guessed his age with 24 guesses, you're not doing well. Even if you thought he looked older, you know he's not over 70, going backwards from there with 24 guesses gets you to 46. Mathing. It's hard.

Unfortunately, that sounds all too familiar these days..

Don't know who we could land but he was a mistake. At the time Calhoun retired, if he had done it right we could have had any number of big time guys. Instead he let his ego get in the way. Now that Ollie is driving us to the bottom it is going to be tougher. We will need to:
A. Pay a lot of money for a bigtime guy
B. Land an up and comer who is maybe a year away from big time consideration;
C. Get lucky with a guy who had modest success elsewhere but is a really good coach; or
D. Land a really solid "retread" who can reestablish the program as a legitimate national power. Doesn't have to win NCAA championships but does need to make us a fixture in the tournament for 4-5 years.
Would you rather have KO or Tom Crean as our coach? That's likely the best you are going to do in this crap league.

I'd take Crean in a heartbeat. He is one of those guys I'd put in the D. Category. Pretty solid coach overall.

I know 2 men who had the dropped foot problem. One had the surgery and is fine and the other had the surgery too late and has a bad limp. I don't know how Matta was able to coach with it.

LOL
What the hell has he won? He has burned bridges with players, families and alumni at Marquette and IU

If they want Ollie I will write a great recommendation!!
Now I understand where you are coming from

Yep. His undoing started two years ago when a big recruiting class which was well ranked all basically left after their frosh years including Daniel Giddens the big kid who is somewhere else now. It was a mass frosh exodus which you rarely see for whatever reason. Kids just did not fit. Hard to recover quickly from that kind of turnover which we've seen some here. That said, Osu expects Uk like results. Cal to OSU? You heard it hear first.

Lots of great hot takes in here. Thought I would come in to find some. Anyway, feel bad for Matta. Getting pushed out of what you like to do when your health is affecting you, especially at 49, sucks bad. I hope for his sake he is able to coach again someday if he wants to.

Arizona prez: No way I'll let Ohio St. hire Miller

If Ohio State is interested in Sean Miller as its next men's basketball coach, the Buckeyes will have a battle to bring him in from Arizona.

"The Ohio State University is great university, but they are not going to get Coach Miller," university president Dr. Robert Robbins told The Arizona Republic on Tuesday. "They will have to come over me to get him, as the saying goes, over my dead body."

Miller's name was one of many floated after the Buckeyes cut ties with Thad Matta on Monday and began a national search at a relatively late time in the offseason.

Robbins told the newspaper he takes such rumors "very seriously."

"I just think he is a quality guy," Robbins said of Miller. "I will do everything in my power to try to convince him to stay."

You continue to reach new depths of just plain stupid...

Tom Crean, who could not get the Indiana Hooosiers past the Sweet 16, even with a top-10 talented roster in either 2012-2013 or 2015-2016? And at the same time has alienated people at both places where he coached (excellent point gtcam)?

Out of all the "down on Ollie" people on here, Freescooter is the worst - and will post his anti-Ollie take every chance he gets. In addition, he will post total crap, biased opinions and false information to support his narrative. He has been doing it for years. Here is another perfect example. Anyone who would even say he would take Tom Crean over Kevin Ollie as the head coach at UConn at this point is a moron, a troll... or something even darker.

Well Tom Crean at least recruits top 10 rosters. Ollie specializes in 1 and donee but not the good kind. Look the guy has 2 years to turn things around. I doubt he does it given next season's roster. Another March sitting home and he might be gone then. Remember the current AD doesn't have any reason to keep a guy who doesn't produce especially if he keeps playing in front of 8000 in Hartford and 6000 in Gampel. You can win or lose but if the fans lose interest you won't last long.

He also specializes in winning tournament games he plays in. We've got the best combo of guards and small forwards in the AAC next season. Time to sack up and get behind KO. Its foolish to think we are going to do better at this point. Remember Memphis had to go with Tubby Smith...

Why does Steven's name come up for college jobs? Is there any reason to think he wants to go back? I think Cooley and Martin are both realistic possibilities.

.-.
It'd be funny if Martin parlayed his final four into a job at Ohio St. I'm guessing that'd be a regrettable hire for Ohio St.

Btw who wants to bet we see a Sean Miller pay raise after the president publicly admits he'd do anything to keep him there? I'd demand another million if I was Miller.

Miller should totally parlay this into a fat new deal. Making 3mil or so now iirc. Shoot for 4 Sean!

So basically you are saying Tom Crean can't coach. Yet you want him as UCONN's coach. Does not compute.
