@jeffborzello: Per @ConnOregonian, Mike Hopkins and Wayne Tinkle are the finalists for the Oregon State job. He says announcement could be made Monday.

Sounds like Boeheim is going to hang around past his due date. I assume Hopkins would be an east coast guy, good luck at one of the most irrelevant programs in the P5.

Hopkins didn't get the job.

I don't think he'll ever coach at Syracuse unless Boeheim pulls a Calhoun and retires in September. The guy hasn't impressed the likes of Boston College or Oregon State - hard to imagine Darryl Gross, who will want to take a star turn, just handing Hopkins the keys.

Tinkle is a northwest guy I think, and I think Oregon State is someplace where they want someone to stay around a while.... I mean it is not the quality program that it was in the era of Ralph Miller....

This "coach in waiting" is one of the biggest misnomers ever to be seen in the sports world.... brought in to attempt to keep a quality coaching bench.... but what frequently happens.... and Syracuse is the perfect example .... is the incumbent coach never leaves..... Boeheim will be 80 and still coaching there..... so for many years Hopkins has been designated coach in waiting.... why would he stay and let the world pass him by..... not sure how great a coach he is.... but he deserves his chance.....

Coach in waiting..... remember that was Muschamp waiting behind Mac Brown..... Texas really missed the boat there.... Muschamp would have been better for UT than Mac.... who was good but never great..... the whole concept of coach in waiting i think is terrible and counterproductive

I really want Hopkins to be the next coach at Syracuse. I think it will set their program back tremendously if they hire from within when they have the clout to grab a known outsider. IMO, the Syracuse program has always underachieved as a result of coaching.

Tell that to Howie, Dave and Tom.

Those guys left when Calhoun was a young pup, relatively. Calhoun retired at 70, right? Boeheim turns 70 before the start of this season.

Hopkins must suck. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Im sure he's tired of Boeheim flicking boogers at him during games also.

I don't think Howie got a sniff when Perno was bounced. Dave and Tom did get that "Next Coach" tag even if it meant they had to hone their chops somewhere else. Kevin came in thanks to a heavenly beam of light.

He's stuck in a bad situation. He's gonna employ Boeheim's 2-3 zone. That is what Boeheim wants at the Cuse when he's gone. I don't know what other program wants a coach that's gonna exclusively coach a 2-3 zone.

The thought of Boeheims tradition continuing after he's gone makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

If Leitao had succeeded at UVA, he'd have been offered the UConn job and the AD's first-born when Calhoun retired. He was my pick to replace Jim until he tanked there. It's too bad, because he looked good at DePaul.

Dave is probably the only one of those 3 who would have been considered. We hit the lottery with KO.
