Any reputable places in Greater Hartford to get treated fairly for my wifes old, broken jewlery? Gold/Silver stuff. Thanks-

I used Prospect Jewelers in Prospect (just outside of Waterbury). They were very professional and easy to work with. It's not Hartford but I would recommend them.

unless you really need the money, id hold onto any gold and silver you have

There was an article in the Courant about a year ago where they took the same stuff to a bunch of places, and IIRC, it was Good Ole' Tom that offered the most.

That's probably the answer.

Take it to a few places and take the best deal.

Not that it matters - we robbed your house this morning.

No doubt. I second this advice. And most places will give you only part value. Minimally, you should not walk into a jewelry store until you know what you have.

Figure out the gold concentration (carat) in your jewelry. Figure out the weight. Figure out the weight of the gold in ounces. Multiply by the spot price of gold, currently 1737. That's what your gold is worth, minus a premium (unless an antique or other fine jewelry).

Point is, unless it's antique and worth more because it's a particular make, for most gold jewelry the value is in the gold, not the design.

Good Ole Tom's gets mixed reviews. BTW, despite the claim in the reviews by the company to have an A- BBB rating, the Better Business Bureau site shows the Hamden store is rated B while East Hartford store is unrated.

I have heard good things about Prospect Jewelers but have no personal experience with them. Their web site.
It would be nice if "better business" was the goal of that organization, but it is really just to promote business. Good or bad.

keep the gold bc with the value of the dollar decreasing you're going to need it

I should also add that when I sold, gold was $1,250 per oz. And I was sure it wouldn't go any higher....probably cost me close to $500 compared to current prices.

Do not go to any of the local places! They will have terrible payouts on the gold. Send your gold to ARA Recycling. http://www.aragold.net/#. Make sure you send your package registered or insured (I usually overnight it). They will have higher payouts then anyone in the area, I guarantee it! Most of the local buyers end up selling their stuff to places like ARA.

Nightmare last night where I was forced to look at Good Old Tom wearing only his cowboy hat. Left me with the shakes for an hour...

Wow, that's crazy, I had the same dream! Except in my dream, I was Tom! I just sat there completely naked (except for the hat) and some random stranger stared at me as I compulsively repeated to him the catchphrase: "Come on down to Good Ole Tom. I wanna give it to you."

Agree its a matter of monitoring prices. Its the number one investment right now. All those new 'we buy gold' commercials popping up should tell you something.

True and there are plenty of people desperate enough to sell their gold. It is crazy that 5 years ago it seemed half the shows op cable were about flipping houses and now it is all about pawn shops and auctions. It really shows where our economy is now.
