To be fair, they tried the "Same Cast" sequel and it wasn't as good. While the Wig/McCarthy reboot might not be good, it might be better than Ghostbusters 2 (and I say this as someone who has all sorts of nostalgia love for it...it just isn't good).
I think you're taking the wrong lesson from this. If you couldn't make a decent Ghostbusters sequel with the same cast, writers, and director just a few years later, you're definitely not going to do it 30 years later with a gimmicky production and entirely different people. Hard to believe, but turns out what made Ghostbusters great was the people making it, not the concept of fighting ghosts.
