OT- Songs of Personal Loss

A trad song from Steeleye Span about a young wife losing her beloved during the Battle of Trafalgar. Folk music is full of broken-hearted women with beaux at sea. It was just a way of life in pretty much any seafaring culture for a few centuries.

Taken from YouTube

“This quiet, gentle version of 'Angels Laid Him Away' by Lucinda Williams would probably meet with approval from Mississippi John Hurt. "Avalon Blues: A Tribute to the Music of Mississippi John Hurt" was released in 2001, and was a tribute to the gentle man of Delta Blues. Various artists joined in the album to make it a special edition: Chirs Smither, Bruce Cockburn, Lucinda Williams, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Steve & Justin Earle, Ben Harper, Gillian Welch, John Hiatt, and Taj Mahal among others. ENJOY!”

I'm confused. Is this thread about personal loss for the poster, or from the point of view of the singer?

Thought of another from the same singer. One of the most chilling songs I know. She and Shelby Lynne are sisters. This is about the murder/suicide that took both of their parents away from them.

Okay, there is a newer version of the song, but I prefer the original. It's a hidden track, you have to skip to about 4:25 to hear it. It's called "Cold Cold Earth."

The first song that popped into my head when I saw the topic was "Tears in Heaven".

Also, Johnny Cash's rendition of "Hurt" would be up there for me.

A few newer songs would be "Eyes Closed" by Ed Sheeran and "Wrecked" by Imagine Dragons.

I always try to come up with less well known songs for these threads.

Here is the first one. John and Mary. John Lombardo was one of the founding members of 10,000 Maniacs and Mary Ramsey took over as the lead singer for 10,000 Maniacs after Natalie Merchant left the band to start a solo career. John and Mary recorded several albums together. This song is from one of them.

Here is another. It's a cover of a song written by Terry Jacks of the Poppy Family. This is a better version than the original.
