LOL! Of course, red dirt IS red clay. Many of us who have lived in red-clay country have stories about it. The first verse in Gillian Welch's song reminded me of this: I played cards with a bunch of folks in Madison, VA, and one weekend we were playing at the house of someone who had a bunch of cats. She didn't care for her yard at all, so a lot of it was just red clay. That week it had rained quite a bit, so it was muddy outside. Her cat Mailbox (named after where she found him) was the sweetest cat, and crawled right up into my lap when I was dummy. The natives gave me that uh-oh look. Mailbox had just come in from outside and the upper legs of my blue jeans were covered with red pawprints. Red clay NEVER comes out once it's set. So I had this pair of jeans that looked almost purposely decorated with red cat pawprints.

So it was pretty easy to pick a song to fit here, the only problem is which version to choose. There are 3 good ones by various artists I like. So with apologies to Julie Miller (she wrote it) and The Wailin' Jennys, I'm going w/:

Cry Cry Cry (Lucy Kaplansky, Dar Williams and Richard Shindell)--By Way Of Sorrow
