OT: Something you miss from summers you had when you were young

I've been trying to find those toasted almond things for years. Can't find them. I found the similar strawberry shortcake ones with the crunchy thing on the outside and either my palate has changed significantly since I was a kid or they changed the way they're made because they were terrible.
Try Blue Bunny strawberry shortcake ice cream bars. Those should bring you back.

I don't think it works that way. We all have a type. Toasted Almond was superior to Chocolate Eclair and Strawberry Shortcake in every way. I'd usually skip ice cream and go for the Choco-Chip cookies (they were great) instead, if Toasted Almond was unavailable.

Strawberry Shortcake was ok. Chocolate Eclair was crap to me. I didn't like the hard, fake chocolate center.

Good Humor discontinued toasted almond bars a few years back. They were one of my favorites, along with buster bars from DQ.

A family member bought me a bag of the outer coating stuff from a company called yumcrumbs. It tasted a little different but was pretty close.

When I was a kid, the rec bus trip to Ocean Beach was the best thing in the world. Everything I liked to do without being micromanaged by adults.
The Gam. Art Decco style decorated swimming pools with bleachers, as well as other buildings. wide beach, arcade with real ammo at shooting gallery(the gun barrels were chained to the arm rest) outdoor bowling with kids as pinsetters, mini golf, archery range at the very end of boardwalk north end. fireworks every week during summer, still the best clam fritters that I can remember, amusement rides. It truly was a destination back in the day. Found some old postcards of the place. There is an effort to bring back a clock tower. The company my dad worked for held their annual picnic/outing there every year when I was a kid. It was something to look forward to. Thanks for the reminder.

This and other amusement type parks reminded me of Lake Compounce in Southington/Bristol and Seaview Playland in Dennisport Ma on the Cape (pitch and put and indoor games like "Poke a Reno" (rolling black rubber balls and they dropped into holes which represented cards like Ace, King, Queen etc) There was also games called "Skee- bowl" I think where you rolled a duckpin like ball onto a ramp and tried to sink it the center hole for max points.
The funny thing was after exhausting everyone of all their money for like a month the grand prizes were like a ceramic black panther or a copper wash plated horse with a bead chain bridle. These prizes probably cost the arcade about a dollar or two. Reminded of this when I saw Steve Martin in "The Jerk" and he is playing a barker at a carnival and is saying "Step right up and win some crap" LOL.

Thank you for letting us know about the Toasted Almond bar. Been looking for them for two years in Florida and even when I travel. Have been settling for the Strawberry Shortcake bar, which is a fine piece of ice cream but IMO falls short of the Toasted Almond.

You were on a deck? Luxury! We had to go in the woods. One night all of a sudden we hear bull horns from the top of the hill "This is the Manchester Police! We know you have kegs, we're comin' down!" That sucked. I only had a couple and didn't have a back-up plan.
Did you go to MHS?

Reminds me of the 'Cow Days' episode of South Park where the boys want the cheap Terrance and Phillip dolls that fall apart once they finally get them and they call "Shenanigans" on the people running the fair.

Hey Guys,

At 75, I truly miss days like this from the 60's:

All day out on L.I. at the LUHI basketball camp learning from greats like Knight, Carnesseca, Layden, van Breda Kolf, Clair Bee, Visscher, Kress, Gugliotta, Morris, Rossini, etc. And I miss those care-free NY teenager bus rides home to the city from camp. Not a care in the world. Great fun & camaraderie!

Pitching a late afteroon/evening no-hitter in Babe Ruth League after camp all day.

Then, scoring 40 points in a late summer league hoops game after camp & pitching.

Then, playing pickup hoops on lighted outdoor courts off West Side Drive @ W83rd St. uptown til 1-2A with really great hooper friends.

Finally, Pigging out at the diner after all those things going on that day.

AND STILL....I had the energy to do ANYTHING, non-stop!

Next day...get up early & do it again.

Now - I get up all night to pee. Ha!

It aint fair. But I was so lucky to have so many "salad" days like the one descibed above.

Enjoy & appreciate ALL YOUR GREAT SUMMER DAYS, FRIENDS!

Father Demo

Hey Farva what’s the name of that restaurant you like with the mozzarella sticks and the goofy on the walls?

I saw Pete last year. His back is still messed up from the fall he took at Colt.
I never heard about that. I saw him in Springfield, so I didn't go to see him at Colt's. He was huge after "Frampton Comes Alive". I did see him about 15 years ago with Yes at Mohegan which was a great show for me. He has had some unfortunate events in his life such as a fire that destroyed many guitars.

I already answered you on this, but in my area these strawberry joints are still prevalent. Perry's is one of the big local ice cream places around here, and they still make them and are in all the stores. I just saw them this morning and had "Big Ern" on my mind.
