It’s too bad neither of the announcers had a clue about the rule. Now they have passed on a lot of misinformation to all of their viewers, who will now think they understand the rule when they actually don’t. If announcers are going to accept a paycheck, part of their job description should be that they learn the rules inside and out. That’s not too much to ask.

You cannot call a challenge on a non-call, only on a call made.

If the referees are allowed to make mistakes without having no to correct them, the announcers should be allowed to do so as well :)
 
Through the course of any basketball game there are going to be a number of missed calls. As others have pointed out, Blakes was mugged by LSU several times with no foul called. Kim & LSU fans will focus on the late game “out of bounds” non-call. But the truth is always that, if a loss comes down to one missed call by the refs, your team didn’t do enough to win the game in the first place.

Amen. As a former ref, I can't begin to count the number of times I had been yelled at by fans who "know" the rules. At least they weren't being paid to disseminate misinformation.

Ummm, so the announcers can/should be allowed to misstate the situation without anyone in the production crew correcting them? Or - although not ideal - perhaps someone back in the studio after the game?

As stamfordhusky pointed out, viewers should be able to expect some degree of rules knowledge/expertise from the game announcers. With the rule changes of what is reviewable and what is not, it shouldn't be difficult to explain the ins and outs to viewers/listeners.

Good grief, a simple crib sheet in front of them would have nipped the misinformation in the bud. Shabby work from my perch.

In the postgame interview she merely responded to a question by saying she had asked for a review. I personally think there should be a review of game changing calls in the last minute of the game!

Question, what's the rules on requesting a review? I believe that in the last minute of the game if a review is requested by a coach they must have a time out to get a review. I believe that she was out of time outs at the time of the request, so no review was allowed.

I wasn't impressed at all in Kim's game management vs Vandy. You said that she didn't really make any adjustments during the game.
Her time outs down the stretch were spastic. How can she not have a timeout left? Announcer actually brought up the possibility of calling one and dealing with the technical that would be assessed. Really?
Also, I thought she needed to lengthen the last minute and a half by fouling. Even Blakes was missing FT's. Put Vandy on the line under pressure. Vandy had the ball with 31 seconds left or so and she still didn't foul. She was lucky Williams hit that 3 to even make it a one possession game. She got lucky there. I would have fouled and made Vandy beat you at the FT line.

Not an expert on these matters, but it was mentioned that a coach can still request a review without a timeout in hand, but they run the risk of a technical foul if the ruling is not in their favor. As someone else has mentioned, there was no immediate whistle associated with the play, so I'm not sure she could ask for a review.

I've been calling them challenges as well, but I just pulled up the rulebook and was surprised not to find the word challenge anywhere. The reason is they are called appeals.

You do NOT need to have a timeout left to make an appeal. (If you have a timeout left, make an appeal and lose, you lose the timeout. If you do not have a timeout left, you can appeal, but if you lose, a technical free-throw will be assessed)

However, you cannot appeal non-calls. I don't think this is explicitly stated but the rules identify situations that can lead to an appeal and your observation of a violation of the rules that wasn't called doesn't appear to be one of them. I'm not an expert and will happily defer if someone points out that I got it wrong.
 
I don't think the NCAA has the authority to force a school to spend millions of dollars to redesign a court that's been in service for 75 years. They can and should enforce the existing rule about Mulkey wondering onto the court.

Including Vanderbilt, LSU had 12 quad 4 wins, one quad 3 win, zero quad 2 wins, and is 1-2 in quad 1 games. Vandy was 1-0, 3-0, 4-0, and 7-0 in quads one through four. That is if I looked up the information correctly.

I like the thought, but I think it is somewhat presumptuous to think or assume that she would want to come back to UConn to replace Geno. Isn't she making her own way at Vandy? Team's getting better every year, facilities are great, didn't they just open a new facility, great academic school, hot city in Nashville, husband and family thriving.
I think Sue Bird would be perfect for UConn.

So, Mulkey didn't know the rule either. She could have appealed and it being an obvious call, she would not have been assessed a technical. I'm talked about the play at the side OB line.

Sue is more focused on building businesses, and I'd bet that UConn would never hire an alum with no coaching experience. There's too much at stake.

For Shea, I vacillate b/w her and Berube, as I'm not sure Shea would want to leave the south, as a NC native.

That's why I added "if she wants to take on the challenge"......she'd have to weigh the opportunity to follow Geno at the winningest WBB program in history, or continue building Vanderbilt, which won't be easy considering their academic requirements and super tough conference....
