OT Serena Loses 3rd Round Wimbledon

I rewatched a clip of Serena's service game several times this morning - clearly she is disoriented, her hand eye coordination is way off. Her gait seems ok, but she is shying away from light in her eyes. As I have been dangerously ill with virus' in the past, I can attest that this is not unusual especially in strong light which can cause headaches to intensify.

I am prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt here as there is no evidence otherwise, and I cannot for the life of me believe that someone who has been through life threatening illness and worked her way back to the top would jeopardize all that by taking any substance that would impair her abilities, especially before a world wide audience. I understand that there have been upsets in her personal life, but again, there is no proof to show that the impairment is related to that as well.

I hope that whatever there is wrong, rightens itself, and we see her at the US Open.

The biggest question I have is why was she allowed to begin the match as it was clear from warm-ups (the first ball hit to her per one of her opponents) that she wasn't right. Why didn't Venus or someone else in their camp step in and prevent that spectacle?

Well, DC, can't speak for others but personally I have absolutely nothing against Venus. I don't care for Serena for exactly the same reason I didn't and don't care for McEnroe; their damn behavior. (Although McEnroe was orders of magnitude worse than Serena. I don't recall Serena ever bullying ball-boys or -girls.) I also liked Jimmy Conners, for the same reasons that most of his fellow pros intensely disliked him. Liked Arthur Ashe, dislike Andy Murray. Strictly a question of comportment. I expect a LOT of other tennis followers would agree.

Big Roger fan but it looks like it's close but no cigar time for him. He's still competitive but it seems inevitably he is losing matches he was winning against the top players. It appears he's lost just enough to not be able to get over the hump. Winning here would have made MY day!

Me too, I was hoping for one more for him, but not to be. Dimtriov (excuse spelling), I like his game.
 
I have to give Kvitova credit for getting into better shape. I saw her in New Haven a couple of years ago and she had a roll. She was dominant.
 
When Venus decided not to compete against Serena in the 2001 semis at Indian Wells, we saw/heard how that was received (that day and in Serena's final against Clijsters). It was one of the ugliest incidents in recent tennis history.

When the Williams sisters withdraw without playing, the criticism is rampant and speculation abounds that tennis is not a priority, that they are faking injuries for their outside interests, etc.

When the Williams sisters decide to play through obvious pain, distress, etc., the criticism is rampant and speculation abounds that there must be drugs involved, that something else is wrong that they are hiding, etc.

They cannot win.

Except they do...A LOT--to the tune of 24 combined Grand Slam singles championships, 13 Grand Slam doubles titles together, and a combined 4 Gold medals.

To imply that they don't care about winning or would fake injuries for attention is so absurd I can't put my mind around it. They are the two greatest things to happen to women's tennis in the past 20 years, and they are still given more criticism and BS than anyone else.

While they are on tour way longer than most pros, it won't be for too much longer, and the tour will see just how much they are missed when they are gone.

You completely missed the point of my post.

When I said they cannot win, I meant in the court of public opinion. If they do not play because of injuries, they get questioned and scrutinized like no other. If they do play and have to retire due to injury, they get questioned and scrutinized like no other.

Serena Williams is my all-time favorite athelte, male or female. Any person on this board knows how much I love her. To claim that I was implying that they do not care about winning or would fake injuries means you did not clearly read my post.

Or you are not addressing me in your comments and are just quoting my post to discuss the naysayers out there who question them. If that is the case, I am sorry for attacking your comments.

I completely agree. I was very disappointed in Chris Evert and also the crowd at Wimbledon. Do you think if that had been Andy Murray taht they would have been jeering and doing the wave? Who does the wave when a player is obviously in very bad medical condition. They showed an incredible lack of class.

Do you think maybe that there also might be a tendency to root against the Williams just because they ARE so big and strong and overwhelming when they are healthy and things are going well? David and Goliath, Jack the Giant Killer sort of thing? Especially when they are playing against smaller, lighter opponents? Nothing against them personally, just a tendency on the part of many fans to root for David against Goliath and celebrate when David wins one? Jus wondrin.
 
Serena is probably not the type of person I would have as a friend. But having a 'tude on the court is quite common for the most successful athletes. I've never felt that one needs to feel a personality connection to an athlete to admire what they do on the court/field of play.

Venus's personality is completely different from Serena's, yet even today some people will group the Williams sisters together as if they're one unit. You can always tell which people haven't really been paying attention, and simply decided to judge/execute them 15 years ago, by how they still group them together.

I'm basing none of it on her on-court demeanor, actually. Game faces are usually different from real faces. I simply see no common ground upon which friendship could be sustained, long term. You don't have to be similar to someone to be their friend, but it helps to have at least something in common. Our interests are simply too divergent. Fashion? Karaoke? Yuck. :)

My apologies for not making myself more clear--I am in complete agreement with you and used your last line as a jumping off point for my own frustration.
