I don't think people get it.
This could be as bad or worse than '38
People should check out the pics from that event
Take away, electricity, water and transport and we're back in caves.
Not saying it will happen, but its not impossible

I was at Home depot and Stop and Shop this AM. People are taking the storm seriously.

I'm not sure I get the "back in caves" scenario. During Irene we had no water or electricity for nearly a week. A bit uncomfortable but hardly stone age.

I was thinking about the West Side of Manhattan where I live.
Consider the possibility of seriously flooded basements from Battery Park City to 14th Street
Power, heat and water off for weeks or more (circuits and boards, heating systems, elevators all need rebuilding or replacement)
If it runs down Wall street, you take out the financial community.
Subways?
Holland tunnel?
Brooklyn Battery Tunnel?

We're speaking of another 10 feet or so more than Irene
Not impossible

Live in Old Lyme, local Boy Scout Troop just came by, going door to door, taking names and asking if we will evacuate. Not mandatory yet but may change. Already seeing flooding by the shore, expect rt156 to be underwater in areas.

Mandatory evacs in Zone A of NYC - the streets and stpres are very busy, but oddly enough, very, very quiet.

I just got home from 3 weeks in Maui. D.C. might be hit very hard. Time to head back to Hawaii. :)

Be safe, everyone! It is better to over-prepare--sort of like Geno's practices.

It's all Milford's fault!

Seriously, hope everyone in the path of this monster storm makes it through with nothing more than a little inconvenience.

Stay strong, my friends!

It's always time to head back to Hawaii. Particularly the Garden Isle of Kauai. :)

Disturbing presser from the Gov. He's labeling this storm as possibly the most dangerous event to ever hit CT. Much concern about flooding along the coast due to storm surge fueled high tides.

He also said that CT will likely experience the most damage of any state although it is expected to make landfall well south of here.

I'm glad I live on a hill and my sympathies for those along the coastline.

South Jersey is already flooded--streets full of water.

The national news showed a supermarket somewhere (New Jersey?) with people stocking up. One cart in plain view had milk, bread, and cupcakes.

Hope everyone in the path of the storm is well stocked with cupcakes--unless you can't eat gluten. :)

People out this morning stocking up and gassing up. I was surprised there were no fender benders at the gs station. People in a big hurry to fill up.

CT coastline will del with big storm surge. Inland, it will be about high winds, not so much the rain. Despite were Sandy makes landfall, we are on the right side of the storm which has the strongest and most damaging winds. The winds are also the reson for shoreline evacuations and the expected coastal flooding.

So in northern Fairfield county, Sandy Hook, we are expecting downed tree limbs and trees. Expect large power outages.

Stay safe Boneyard!

Wasn't Hawaii under a tsunami watch?
Not that I noticed. At least nothing happened while I was there. I've been to the Tsunami Museum in Hilo. Tsunamis are to Hilo are what floods are to Johnstown--repetitive, horrific natural catastrophes.

I'd be happy to go back to Maui if it would make Sandy turn out to sea. Actually, I'd go back for a lot less than that. :)

Yes, Nan - due to an earthquake off Canada. I'm out here on vacation - all islands had mandatory shore evacuation (in our hotel, that meant move to 4th floor and above - we were already on the 6th).

It was never expected to be catastrophic, but shore-line damage was possible. So far as I know, although a few areas experienced some 8 foot water movement, no major damage occurred, and the event actually lasted only about 3 to 4 hours.

Michael was talking about his 'man cave' a few blocks from Grand Central Station.

My niece in in Hawaii, they had a tsunami warning. She didn't know what the warning signal meant at first.

We've lost power five times now. Twice, long enough to start the generator, although the power has restored each time, so far.

Twice more , in last five minutes.

Hmmm, yes, ...all the classic symptoms, Phil. Please, don't let this happen to you...
